Throwback: 2SM Request Line with Gordon O’Byrne 1978

Enjoy a blast from the past and see what things were like on 2SM’s request line with Gordon O’Byrne in 1978. 

The behind-the-scenes clip from the year shows callers contacting the station with a song request and dedication message before being sourced from a collection of records by the team. One team member holds a lit cigarette while on the phone. 

The clip shared by Instagram page @retrosydney_ features a comment from WSFM’s Brendan Jones of Jonesy & Amanda, who said 1978 was the year he had a school trip to 2SM which sparked his radio dream ambitions.

“Man! That’s the year I went on a school excursion to 2sm and that’s where the inspiration hit,” wrote Jonesy. 

Jonesy and Amanda recently celebrated 18 years on air together.

Gordon O’Byrne worked at Perth stations 6PR, 6PM, 6IX, 6KY and 96FM, with a stint in Sydney at 2SM in the 70s. 

Unfortunately, O’Byrne passed away last year, aged 74.
