All you need is love … and 774: ABC’s Global Beatles Day surprise

Reporter

Hundreds of people gathered on the steps of Victoria’s State Library yesterday to celebrate Global Beatles Day with 774 ABC Melbourne.

It was all top secret for Bob Murphy & Richelle Hunt from 774 Breakfast, as they delivered a flashmob choir for the people of Melbourne to celebrate the day and prove that all you need is love.

It even got the attention of The Beatles themselves, with the Fab Four’s Instagram account sharing the video overnight.

One passerby said “I’m just a little teary, it was very moving”.

Seventy people from five choirs secretly rehearsed for the special performance, starring Bob Murphy as the lead singer.

As people made their way to work, they were delighted by the city surprise.

Listeners had been invited to join Bob at the State Library. They were aware something was happening, but didn’t know what.

Bob said “It’s easy to be cynical, especially these days and I’m as guilty of that as anyone, but to have a bunch of like-minded strangers (more or less) singing a Beatles song was pretty uplifting. For me, at least, hopefully for a few passers by, too.”

774 Content Director Jo Woods said “It was terrific to inject some heart and joy onto the streets of Melbourne on Global Beatles Day.”
