96three announcers Leroy Brown and Aiden Grant are both departing the Geelong-based Christian community station following a recent restructure.

Brown was 96three’s Breakfast host and Content Director. Grant was the station’s Assistant Content Director and Drive announcer.

In a statement to Radio Today, 96three CEO Kathy Campbell said “96ThreeFM has recently commenced a strategic restructure in response to a significant decline in fundraising revenue over the last two financial years. After a second consecutive year of reduced income, the organisation has taken necessary steps to reduce costs and ensure long-term financial sustainability.”

“As part of this process, changes have been made across both the administrative and staffing budgets.”

“To maintain on-air operations, current staff were all offered the opportunity to apply for revised roles, some with reduced hours. While some have embraced these changes, others have made the decision to pursue alternative opportunities.”

“We are deeply grateful for the dedication and service of all our team members who have helped share the hope of Christ across our region and we remain committed to delivering uplifting, Christ-centred content to our listeners.”

Previously SCA’s Content Director for Bendigo and Shepparton, Brown relocated his family to Geelong in 2023 to take up the CD role at 96three.

He led a rebrand of the station, also heading up a series of local initiatives including  Blanket Geelong – collecting over 700 blankets for the city’s homeless – as well as Little Boxes, Relationship Reboot and Recycle for Radio.

“After two years of hard work with this incredible team, I genuinely felt like we had just gotten going, which makes it all the more disappointing to have to put down the batton now,” Brown said.

Brown says with new management, some of his responsibilities were restructured and his role became more limited.

“While it’s difficult to step away, I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished at 96three.”

Grant – who won a Radio Today award for his Songs That Changed You podcast – said “I’m gutted to be finishing up at 96three. My family and I moved over from Adelaide to Geelong in July last year. It was a family affair, with my wife and kids often joining me for segments on air each day, so we are all feeling it.”

“Plus, I feel bad for the listeners, losing their Breakfast and Drive show on the same day.”

I am so disappointed for the listeners of 96three to have both of these shows taken away. Leroy and Aiden were creating positive content that was entertaining and full of heart. Community centred and making a difference in Geelong.

This is a huge mistake! Leroy and Aiden bring so much industry experience and had the potential to build an incredible Christian station here in Geelong… From listening to the station it’s obvious the station doesn’t have a clear music strategy with no idea what target audience they are aiming for. I won’t be donating to the station anymore.

Such an awful decision. My family loved listening to Aiden on the way home from school everyday. Looks like will be on the hunt for a new station to listen to now.

96three are losing some amazing talent. This is really disappointing for all of 96three listeners. Good luck to Aiden and Leroy on their next venture.

Why would you get rid of the breakfast and drive show before casual or part time announcers? This makes no sense.

Absolutely heartbroken to hear this news. Aiden has been the voice of my drive homes since discovering 96three when he started. It’s very hard to imagine the station without him. I was also sad that both Aiden and Leroy didn’t get a final goodbye show for us to call up and say how much we’ll miss them. Aiden if you see this know you brought warmth, laughter, and genuine connection through the airwaves. You’ll be very missed!

What a dumb short sighted decision, Aiden is a great innovative talent, his podcasts are absolutely world-class.

I can’t wait to see what he does next.

This would’ve been such a hard decision for the station to make, but highlights the importance of Fundraising for community stations. They do not have commercial revenue to rely on, and as such the community need to support the station if they want the benefits of live (paid) Announcers to continue. This is a really hard lesson for all involved

Aidan relocated his entire family to Geelong for this opportunity which was a massive decision only to have the job restructured! This is a huge loss and has also had a great impact on the family and no doubt the community who will now no longer get to experience these fantastic segments and shows!

Such a shame to see Aiden go. He really is such a good presenter and always brings the laughs.

Thats a shame!
Their 2 best radio presenters are no longer on air.
Just not the same now.
I pray they find work soon if not already.
Thank you Aiden and Leroy for all your great time on air at 96three you both made me smile and laugh everytime I heard you.
