Triple M’s Rush Hour Adelaide to finish at the end of 2024

Reporter

The axe has fallen on Triple M’s top rating Adelaide Drive show, with The Rush Hour – hosted by Andrew Jarman, Bernie Vince and Greg Blewett – to finish at the end of this year.

Jarman, Vince and Blewett were reportedly informed of the decision on Tuesday, with Blewett telling The Advertiser (subscription required) “It doesn’t make sense to any of us.”

“Obviously our show was going great and we were rating really well but it’s a management decision in regards to the business.”

“Unfortunately we’re the ones that have to pay the price.”

The show was #1 in its timeslot in the most recent radio ratings.

Just last year, Jarman celebrated 21 years on-air at Triple M.

It’s yet to be confirmed whether the show will make way for a syndicated Melbourne version, hosted by James Brayshaw and Billy Brownless.

The Advertiser reports the program will be off-air for the rest of the week, and that, in a statement, SCA thanked Jarman, Blewett and Vince for their incredible contributions, saying further detail regarding the 2025 Drive show will be provided in due course.

When even the top rating shows get the boot, what really is the hope for the rest of us?

I love this industry but a career at the Maccas Drive thru offers more job security…

The race to the bottom continues.
If you are not part of Sydney or Melbourne you just become a relay station.

@Peter

Radio isn’t dying, Radio jobs are dying.

I’ve been in the radio industry for 46 years and one of the biggest changes I’ve seen in the industry is staffing levels.
It’s all about money folks.
I often think to myself that I’ve seen the best of radio in my youth.

Well there goes another great show that I listen to every afternoon and get a great laugh from these 3 guys. I will say if their not around anymore then I’ll just be listening to Spotify as I don’t enjoy any other drive shows on my way home. I like most ppl enjoy the banter these guys put out. I’m hopeful that this decision can be reversed at some stage.
All the best Jars Bernie and greg. It has been a pleasure listening to you

Most stupid decision yet made by management who can’t read the room. Will have to find a new radio station to listen to now. Hope someone else picks them up and all their listeners move with them. Good luck fellas SA is on your side.

I am very disappointed that the drive show will no longer drive me home. I listen everyday and enjoy the show. When I get home I grab my ipod and continue listening as I go for a walk. I do not enjoy listening to Brayshaw and Billy from melb. We are South Aussies and local is best. That is it for me, goodbye triple m. First you tried to can the quiz and now the show. Bad decision.

Mate,
This is bollocks, just saw the news about the rush hour, came over to Triple M a year ago and listen to them on the podcast everyday. Bunch of the funniest, most genuine and warm people. The chemistry between them is top notch and there is a reason they are number 1 and go “Global” . Ridiculous decision by the higher ups, feel free to set up a go fund me page to keep the boys on (they should do a podcast) I’ll chip in the first $500.
Devastated…

It’s really time for the government to step in and do something about the media industry. We are getting to a point were there will be very limited voices, networked from 1 or 2 capital cities.

I know this massively over simplifies a very, very complex set of issues, but, a thought starter is:
1. Tax the multinational digital companies on revenue, rather than profitability to ensure Australia is actually getting it’s share of the tax on advertising revenue being generated by these organisations from our country
2. Use part of this tax revenue to incentivise local media companies to invest in local content in the markets that the company owns the license
3. Apply stronger requirements for local content as a condition of owning broadcast licenses, and actually enforce
4. When consulting with the industry on media reform, consult broadly (not just licence owners, consult with journalists, talent, media schools etc)

Ownership of media should be considered as an endeavour that is beyond the commercial aspects of a businesses. Yes, it is important to make returns for shareholders, however, that can’t be the only measure of success. We shouldn’t view networking shows across capital cities as being something special. These are large markets that can sustain local programs (even if we accept that drive will be a national show – do we really think that breakfast and mornings/workdays should be networked in capital cities?).

There are huge community benefits of local content done well. It should be incumbent on the media owners to ensure that there is a genuinely mix of local voices and content and it should be incumbent on the government to level the competitive field to ensure that the local media companies can provide these vital community service.

Lastly, for those media companies that are unable to make the increased minimum local content required content work, perhaps force them to forfeit the license?

Totally different topic – I also think the ABC should have a much, much, much higher local music content target, but that’s a rant for another day.

Just thoughts, probably not the right solution (as I’m sure many people in this forum will let me know).

This will be the beginning of the end of 104.7s run in Adelaide ratings. You don’t make these decisions when the station and the show are having a golden run. Dumb.
