The price of a reckless pursuit
Shortly before his departure from Triple M was confirmed last week, one Melbourne scribe drily remarked that Marty Sheargold had so many lives, he was starting to resemble a cat.
So many chances. So many golden opportunities.
Not a bad wicket to be on. But one of the opportunities Sheargold was most recently gifted came at the expense of local SCA teams.
In November last year, it was announced that Triple M’s regional on-air line-ups in New South Wales and Queensland were making way for The Marty Sheargold Show.
Now Marty would be driving the local listeners home.
Acknowledging the success and achievements of the local Rush Hour shows he was replacing, Sheargold said at the time “I’m committed to carrying on their legacies.”
But instead of a great show, last week it all turned into a monumental shitshow.
The Matildas. Women’s sport. Endometriosis. Sheargold took aim … and he took no prisoners.
His comedy may have missed the mark, but the damage was done. Suffice to say, I don’t think I’ve ever received so many WTF? texts and messages to my inbox as I did last week.
“WTF was he thinking?”
Only Sheargold himself knows the answer to that question.

It’s certainly not the first time SCA has dealt with fallouts of this magnitude.
I was a breakfast news presenter working at SCA Melbourne in 2012 when security guards were deployed to escort us to our cars in the wake of the royal phone prank.
The following year, during Triple M’s Hot Breakfast days, it was Eddie McGuire making headlines for his comments about a high profile AFL footballer.
I remember pulling out of Triple M’s underground car park to find a posse of TV journalists gathered at the boom gates, waiting impatiently, and certainly not for my Ford Fiesta. They were ready to pounce at the first sighting of Eddie in his Lexus.
And yet, the depth of the social media backlash Sheargold’s comments have generated is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.
Olympians, high profile radio identities, columnists, former colleagues, competitors, people in the street who wouldn’t know Marty if they fell over him – even the PM – have joined the pile-on.
Despite apologies from both Sheargold and Triple M, that pile-on is showing no signs of letting up.
Believe me, I can see the irony here: My pointing out that local radio jobs were sacrificed to accommodate the expansion of Sheargold’s show could certainly be construed as sinking the boot in, too.
But now Sheargold has become the target, and I don’t envy him one little bit for what he’s up against right now.
I have learnt a very important lesson from all of this
Do not anything negative about the Matilda’s because that will be the end of your career
I’ve also learnt that some people’s mental health needs to be taken into account and other people’s doesn’t.
I am a woman and I am furious Triple M pandered to this woke !!! BS. If Fifi Box said on air
(in the name of comedy) that she hated men’s cricket, they can stick it up their ar…” no one would have said a word. Women stand up comedians say horrendous & funny about men.
Do the knives come out for them .?? I cannot believe that lady cried on air…
The same the ridiculous reaction to ” Baby Reindeer” . If the stalker was a man, he would have been crucified, not pitied. Get a grip, people. I have heard much worse things in the name of comedy. If the Matlida’s want to be in man sport, then toughen up your brains.
All the wokes in the world are just wa….. go Marty !!!!!!!
In an Australia where over 100 women were murdered by men last year, maybe some of these brain dead morons we have hosting these lame shows will start to consider what they say before they attempt their ‘comedy’. And yet, here you are defending him, and I see lots of other women defending him too. I don’t get that, but I’m glad to see this bloke get the boot (tho they’ll wait a year and he’ll be back of course)
What on earth is with these comments, saying “you can’t say anything negative about the Matildas or you get cancelled!”
Mark Bosnich on SEN had some brilliant criticism of the team. No one is cancelling him. Probably because his criticism is quality and doesn’t devolved into “women suck at sport”.
I don’t even know what Sheargold’s “joke” was. Why are we even calling him a good comedian anymore, its just lazy comedic thought.
Watch out when they don’t like what you say, oh maybe everything you discuss is proper,,,,, no one day someone will not like your opinion and text wtf. I truly hope that day never comes, but who could imagine 20 years ago that we cannot joke about some subjects. Please watch 1984 everyday and ensure you promote freedom of speech not matter what the consequences to your security. It matters Winston.

What some smart thinking woman should’ve done was to challenge Marty to a sporting contest like Bobby Riggs v Billie Jean King , wouldve been fun , male v female.
The VAST majority of men AND women support Sheargold in this. His comment on endometriosis was ill-advised, the other remarks based on truth. Hardly something to lose your job over – unless of course you’re a man and become yet another victim of feminist’s war on men. But we’ve had enough. We now know this outrage is coming from mainly feminist journalists. Again, we’ve had enough.
I learned I have alot in common with Marty.
Guys, Mike’s had enough. It’s been a long few years of a small percentage of men facing mild backlash for their unhinged behaviour and HE HAS HAD IT.
As many a wise man once said, there’s no need to be so dramatic, Mike.
Someone went on a weird, openly discriminatory, and inappropriate rant(s) in their workplace. That person got fired. End of.
P.s. I froth made up stats too, like ‘the vast majority of men AND women support Marty’. Be a doll and imagine me up another one – what’s the death toll of the ‘war on men’?
The comments of some show just how out of touch commercial FM radio is.
These white “blokes” are furious they have lost their right to mock others.
Tough.
