Smooth surpasses all comers to be Sydney’s #1 station

Reporter

Smooth FM 95.3 continues to quietly dominate the Sydney airwaves, surpassing all its competitors to be the city’s #1 radio station overall with an 11.8% share in GfK Survey 5.

With the latest book showing a cume figure of 1.383 million listeners, Smooth’s Head of Programming Peter Clay says these are absolutely incredible results.

“Smooth is delivering audiences in record numbers because, every day, we focus on creating a product that genuinely resonates with listeners, across the generations, and provides an environment Australians can connect with.”

Smooth FM 91.5 also cemented its position as the #2 FM station in Melbourne, securing a share of 9.8% (up 0.1 share points).

@Mick C: Although one can only guess without any official ratings data, I don’t think it’d be any major surprise if 2GB was Sydney’s #1 station during the overnight hours by a significant margin.

@Hkn: Yep, the WSFM > Gold relaunch is looking like it could be a future case study on how to completely destroy something that people like! As much as I wish Jonesy & Amanda well for their (forced) moved to Drive, I can’t see that ending particularly well for ARN.

That said, along with the aforementioned changes at 101.7 I think Smooth 95.3 is helped somewhat by the fact ACE Radio aren’t doing as well with Classic Hits 2UE as they probably should be.

Personally? I’m not a great fan of Smooth 95.3 but at least respect the station for finally being able to crack 2GB’s dominance of the Sydney market, particularly during the 9am to Midday timeslot. With the previously mentioned J&A timeslot shift, I’d assume Bogart & Emma will be hoping to officially dance with Ben Fordham and Kyle & Jackie O for the title as Sydney’s #1 brekky show in 2026!
