Michael McLaren to host 2GB Afternoons in 2024

Reporter

Michael McLaren has been confirmed as the new host of 2GB Afternoons, commencing in January 2024.

McLaren started his radio career at 2GB in 2006 as a program producer. His on-air career kicked off in 2011, first hosting 2GB’s Weekend Overnight program before taking on Australia Overnights Monday-Friday in 2016. In 2023, he fronted 2GB’s top rating Weekend Mornings program.

On his new role as 2GB Afternoons host, McLaren says “It is an honour to be asked to host Afternoons. The program has a rich and proud history on 2GB and I look forward to opening the next chapter from January 15.”

“I will bring my interests and apparent dry sense of humour with me in the kit bag. It’ll be traditional afternoon radio. We’ll keep abreast of the news as it unfolds but also afford people a chance to laugh, learn and reminisce.”

2GB Content Manager Luke Davis says “We’re absolutely delighted to bring our listeners more of Michael McLaren in 2024. Michael’s performance over the past 12 years has been outstanding, with listeners warming to his intelligence, quick wit and knack of breaking down complex issues. His ability to cover anything from the news of the day, to travel, nostalgia, health, cars, technology and entertainment makes him the perfect companion for Afternoons.”

2GB Afternoons with Michael McLaren will premiere on Monday 15 January 2024.

Michael sounds like every shift is his first. His use of voice is very odd and hard to listen to. Fordham is the same. Management at 2GB should get someone in to (try) to train them.

Why not bringJim Ball back on overnights to replace S G
??

About time Michael deserves it.. So happy they didn’t over look him. Can only imagine how hard doing a 5.5 hour shift on overnights is, then getting to bed waking up and spending at least another 8 hours preparing for the next show. This guy deserves the afternoon shift on 2GB. Michael’s interlect at such a young age blows my mind, reminds me of Brian Carlton who was one of the youngest talk back announcers in the early 1990’s at UE I think Carlton was 27. I’m guessing Michael would have been about the same age maybe a couple years diffrence when he started on air at 2GB. Congratulations to Michael.

Wonderful!! I’ve been waiting for the day to arrive when Michael progresses to a full day time shift. I can’t do any better than quote the words of 2GB Content Manager, Luke Davis when he said, “Listeners have warmed to his intelligence, quick wit and knack of breaking down complex issues. His ability to cover anything from the news of the day, to travel, nostalgia, health, cars, technology and entertainment makes him the perfect companion for Afternoons.” Here here.

Life style segments are so boring – yes hard news and current affairs – don’t make it a big yawn Michael – you were better on the midnight to dawn – time will tell – 2GB is missing the great presenters of the past.

Please don’t ever replace Luke Grant away from Overnight on 4bc, he is a brilliant broadcaster and a marvellous entertainer, love him so much don’t know how we will cope without him for five weeks. By the way, The broadcast from Melbourne is awful. Car

Congrats and well overdue. I hoped after Smithy lost afternoons in 2020 Michael would be a walk up start for that shift. And when that didn’t pan out he would at least be offered the Drive slot. Jim Wilson and Deb Knight while decent people can’t hold a candle to McLaren as radio presenters. My only criticism with McLaren is he can find a sickie and large block of annual leave quite often.

I would have liked Bill Woods to get the weekends. Happy that Michael McLaren got the arvo gig, too good to be overnight or weekends. Very happy with the lineup, from, Ben, Ray, Michael, Chris & of course the wonderful John Stanley, no room for the fabulous, funny Neil Breen.
