Michael McLaren to host National Overnights on Nine Radio

Staff Writer

Changes continue to come thick and fast at the newly rebranded Nine Radio, with the network announcing changes to Overnights.

2GB Overnights host Michael McLaren will now be heard on a national basis, across 3AW, 4BC and Nine Radio’s network stations.

His show will take place midnight – 5:30am Monday to Fridays.

Nine Radio’s head of content Greg Byrnes revealed that 3AW’s Overnight hosts Tony Moclair and Bianca Johnston may remain with the business.

“I want to thank Tony Moclair and Bianca Johnston for the work they’ve done on 3AW overnights,” said Byrnes.

“We’re currently discussing other opportunities within the business with them.”

Moclair and Johnston farewelled listeners in a Facebook post.

“In the ever changing landscape of the media, We are sorry to say that we (Tony and Bianca) will not be returning to Australia Overnight this year,” said the post.

“We’ve valued your loyalty and contribution to the show. You’ve been a wonderful audience and as we all deal with this change together, we sincerely hope you extend the same warmth, generosity and passion that you have shown us to Michael McLaren and his team.”

This is not the first time, 3AW dumped local overnights with Andrew McLaren in favor of Overnight program with Luke Bona from 2UE months before the Fairfax – Macquarie Radio Merger back in 2015 for a year and a half before Tony Moclair took over the overnight slot from Melbourne.

According to Facebook Comments People are not happy with changes to overnights now coming from 2GB.

Why take off the best radio pair of presenters Tony and Bianca. I listened to them every night they were on and derived great pleasure from their banter and laughter. As I have trouble getting to sleep at night it was something I looked forward too at night. 3aw in my opinion, have some of the worst presenters on radio, namely Neil Mitchel,Drama queen, statue builder to the Melbourne football team, Tom Elliott, loves to talk about Tom and Daddy, then of course there is the old woman who knows everything, rightly or wrongly, talks over everybody with his ridiculous opinions, and I of course am talking about Nick MCallum. As the only other presenters I like are Part timers James and Jones,I have no further interest in 3aw,so at night a m tuning in to the Abc. Thanks for nothing.

This is an absolute disgrace, Nine should be ashamed of themselves with what they’ve done to 3AW over the past year. What’s next? When Neil retires we’ll get the Sydney stuff too? We don’t want Sydney broadcasts because they ARE FOR SYDNEY LISTENERS. We are a city of over 6 million people who deserve our own stuff. Nothing against Michael McLaren, but I hope ratings plummet in Melbourne for this garbage.

I turned on radio this morning to listen to the regular Tony and Bianca and got this rubbish from Sydney.
Melbourne people don’t want to listen to mostly Sydney talk and about Sydney news.
My opinion is you have made a massive big mistake and your station will suffer
And to call the news …..9News well how dumb does that sound.
I wont be a listener anymore to the overnight rubbish from Sydney

Extremely disappointed Tony and Bianca have been excluded from Australia Overnight. A listener for many years, Tony was a gem – couldn’t wait to hear the banter between Bianca and Tony, and they will be grossly missed by all Overnighters. When will 3aw realise that Sydney Broadcasters are so very different from their Melbourne counterparts and it just “doesn’t work” here! Why try to fix something when it isn’t even broken! Good Luck Denis Walter – looking forward to your slot (replacing Sydney) but watch your back!
Oh well, 91.5 looking good…………….

Big mistake. Good luck, Tony and Bianca, thanks for the thousands of hours of fresh entertainment. The two of you will be quite alright and it’s time to move on from that establishment, even if it means taking a pay cut. Good things will come your way for sure.

A loyal 15 year plus listener of 3AW but the sacking of Tony & Bianca is it for me. The re-branding to 9 Radio is a joke. How many times do they generate Sydney Centric content into Melb to realise it just doesn’t work – refer the Luke Bona debacle.

James Caddy nailed it in his comments regarding Mitchell & the stammering stuttering Elliott. His comments regarding McCallum were also spot on.

MMM Country & 774 for me now. Nine NEWS……on a radio station. How freaking dumb can you be !!!!

Best thing 3AW has ever done. Introduce some new blood into what is the echo chamber state. Victorians might finally realise that there’s a world outside of Melbourne.

Very Upset over the loss of Tony & Bianca on overnights.
Bright , refreshing , and funny entertainment always.
As a truck driver they were always as great relaxing , non depressing way to start the new dawn with a smile.
Sydney radio is and has always been the same , bland , boring and depressing and not real talk back at all , it’s the same old stuff over and over , designed to a create outrage response .
Its a real shame 3aw was always “Melbournes Own 3AW”
Now it’s it’s Nine News , It must really hurt the presenters on the news to say that before every news bulletin .
They have lost me as I couldn’t care less about Sydney , and I don’t wish to hear about it.
I left there 30 years ago to move to Vic to get away from it.
Now it’s being forced back into my life via my ears whether I like it or not programming .
What a shame.
Bye Bye 3AW.

Wha a terrible decision. Tony and Bianca are Melbourne. They are funny, compassionate, entertaining, heartfelt, informative, sincere. They gave loney people companionship, cheered up sad people, put a laugh even on the happiest of faces. Smiles all around. I listened to them from overseas calling in many tmes. They built a family out of many people from all walks of life from Toorak to Inverloch, from Broadmedows to as far as America and Israel and many other places. Shame on you channel 9, are dollars more important than soul? Bring them back asap. We all miss them. They are quality. They are family.

Goodbye 3aw. Bad bad decision for night owls I will now be listening to Trevor Chapel and Pav. Loved every minute of Tony’s overnight show , as a light sleeper it was a comfort to listen to Tony on waking don’t want to know about other states, just loved All the segments and Tony and his aviation knowledge

I’ve listened to 3aw for years, not any more why listen to a station that doesn’t consider its listeners. All the best Tony and Bianca. 3aw will be a big black hole. I’ll be switching to ABC for good

Phil
13 Jan 2020 - 9:42 pm

Hard to believe that we will go around that circle again. Cost cutting initiatives followed by the question why have we lost listeners to be followed up by the realisation that Sydney radio doesn’t work in Melbourne other than in short bursts. Sydney presenters can’t foster the intimate relationship with listeners that melbournians expect.

13 Jan 2020 - 11:02 pm

I’m not surprised that Nine are networking overnights. They probably think it’ll have minimal impact to 3AW’s localism considering their prime time shifts are now all Melbourne based programmes again.

Very curious though reading all the comments here; I wonder if all those disgruntled 3AW listeners switching to other stations like ABC Radio Melbourne (774) and smoothfm 91.5 realise that a lot of their content is networked too (including from.. wait-for-it.. Sydney!)?

I like many other listens to 3aw are just devastated that Bianca and tony are no longer doing the Nightline radio they are a refreshing duo and make nightime listening a joy to people like me that suffer insomnia we don’t want or need Sydney content 3aw was always a Melbourne station channel 9 you are a disgrace the talent you have in Melbourne shouldn’t be ignored you have lost me as a listener after 30 years

14 Jan 2020 - 12:54 pm

Big mistake. Why don’t you get rid of that self-centered, narcissistic, second class “journalist “ Tom Elliot with his grumpy father? Tony Moclair is funny, very knowledgeable and very entertaining. Why did you change Denis Walter’s time slot? He is a very good radio host and his style and program was perfect for the afternoon period. What will happen with the regular Friday Lunch program? Dee Dee certainly won’t be able to step in. She is a bit boring. I might listen only Denis occasionally but his slot doesn’t really suit lots of people. I will definitely change to ABC and RN.

Why get rid of genuine entertainment like Tony and Bianca and replace them with boring Sydney centric rubbish (nothing against MM, he’s a talented man)
Radio is a completely different medium to tv, more local, intimate, personal and interactive . And what the heck is that intro ‘nine news’ which is obviously awkward for the newsreaders. 9, you don’t get it and you’ve lost me and others I know.

Steve
14 Jan 2020 - 2:57 pm

An absolute tragedy – obviously another bunch of knuckleheads have been “promoted” or “transferred” at HO and been told to leave their mark.

what is the point of building the highest rating radio station in Aust and them progressively fiddle around with it and completely destroy it.

It started with having the bad tempered garden troll Price carve in and take over the whole evening over Simon and Phil, then dicked around with Andrew Mclaren, shafted Hinch for the Carlton fool and “i wanna be everybody else” Elliot, and lately “Nine News”

Seriously ?? –

Cant they just leave the good alone and let them do what they do best instead of trying to have Sydney loud mouthed, opinionated and aggressive morons shoved into their non natural environs.

i can safely say, i’m off AW until 0530 and then off after DD at 1500.

thanks for ruining a good thing

Melbournians do not want to listen to boring Sydney radio, or TV for that matter. Radio and TV produced from Melbourne is simply just better.

I’ll just have to learn to go to sleep early. Although if I listen to this guy I’ll probably nod off in no time.

Oh yeah.. Matt, Melbourne’s better. Better footy and if they think Karl Stefanovic is the best they can get, say no more.

Actually I wouldn’t be unhappy if they get rid of Neil Mitchell and Tom Elliot.
It doesn’t worry me that much ‘cause I don’t listen to 3aw in the day and now it looks like the night either.
Thank goodness for my crime podcasts

As a Sydneysider, I tuned into Tony every night. Loved his program with sense of humour, banter with Bianca and segment with Bob Tarlau. Disappointing that 9 have seemed fit to dump this program. I reckon Melbournites will abandon 3AW in droves.

14 Jan 2020 - 8:39 pm

Come on 3AW and 9 media haven’t you learnt from the 80s Alan Bond bought 3AK from Kerry Packer and stuffed up a very good station and a very good formate when it had beautiful music.
Alan Bond decided to try and merge 3AK and 2UE together, what a stuff up that was because every talk back caller was from Sydney and of course 2UE shock jocks presenting nearly every time slot. I don’t know how the FM stations pull it off as some shows come down from Sydney and the same with the ABC but somehow, commercial am radio stations just can’t pull it off.
The nine news theme is alright but they need tweek it just a little bit more such as, when the nine news theme comes on, it should be like the TV when the back announcer says this is nine news us the news readers name and then the news reader would say a few head lines the the current temp and the time. and then go straight into the news.
At the moment you have the 9 news theme and news reader comes on and does the current temperature and he’s the confusing part, then says 9news at 8.
If Melbourne listener want hear 2GB or 2SM why not put them on Digital radio(DAB+) or their is also on line.

9 radio needs to get rid of Macquarie Sports Radio and bring back Magic and turn that into a beautiful music station and have Maqurie Sports Radio on the digital format( DAB+)

Infuriating how Melbourne with a population of 4.9 million people, has to put up with Sydney news and opinion- it is irrelevant here! People are giving 3AW a miss and are losing interest in The Age, which is full of Sydney content. The Nine Network needs to wake up that the less listeners and readers there are, then the less exposure their advertisers have. The Nine Network is amateur hour.

Stav
14 Jan 2020 - 9:29 pm

Nine Network please note- Sydney radio doesn’t work in Melbourne. The Nine Network advertising clients should negotiate a cheaper rate, as the audiences will be diminishing, and that means less exposure.

Heavens above how many more changes?!
Deedee is great.
Denis will be great in evenings. He will be entertaining – rather than the more more current affairs of that Sydney person.
Tony Moclair was great overnight. So informative, well read and clever. Why lose him?
Why do we get yet another Sydney person? It never ever works for Melbourne listeners!
I’m not interested in traffic jams in Bondi, I want to know what’s happening around Melbourne.

15 Jan 2020 - 6:37 pm

One of the strengths of 3AW was its Melbourne and to an extent Victoria heart.

Across many decades I have enjoyed this Radio Station but losing Tony and Bianca was the last straw for me. I greatly enjoyed their genuine interaction along with their humour and good natures.

I’m not interested in a Sydney based presenter no matter how good his or her credentials may be.

You’ve lost me as a listener.

Some shocking decisions with the new 2GB regime.
The latest being why stick Michael McLaren on the graveyard shift? The guy has talent and has done his time and deserves a promotion.
And it seems like a matter of time before newsroom is gutted and Nine people will be used instead.
Sad

Certainly not thinking about the loyal audience who love Tony and Bianca. I will be tuning out.

David Schwarz
15 Jan 2020 - 11:31 pm

Here is an idea that some brave person that could invest in and a commercial
License and compete with 3AW as this station would only be on the DAB+ only and the more people buy DAB+ radio’s maybe they could close down the am formate down and existing am stations can move to FM.
Getting back my idea to teach 9media a lesson.
This station could be a news talk and music format and this idea is that the sacked personalities that did work for 3AW, ABC Melbourne or any other Melbourne identity that knows Melbourne and Victoria and for the music side of things. Music that suits the mood.

The finest overnight team on 3aw for some years, you start to get used to them and really enjoy them when some managerial cretin decides you can’t have them, I have listened to the overnight show since before Hal Todd, I will not be treated with such disdain, I despise 3aw for this

Steve

For crying out loud Nine – you have just gone and got rid of Jane Bunn for the weather

Whoever is running that lunatic farm that was 3AW is hell bent on destroying it

Why don’t you just close it down and transfer all the content from sydney

Talk about strangling the golden goose

You’re finished as a station – ohh, hello Nova

16 Jan 2020 - 11:01 am

What a shame for Melbournites! Had to happen though following on from the great loss of Alan Pearsall. I loved and respected Tony and Bianca and particularly the nightly segment with Bob Tarlau of which I was an avid listener. Bob Tarlau helped us from being insular and cut off from what is happening elsewhere. If Mike McLaren had any sense, which he does and a loads of it , he should re-engage Bob Tarlau 5 nights a week at 3.00 am and not just on the one early morning a week I have heard him on 2GB Sydney. Make no mistake, Mike McLaren is a well informed presenter, politically savvy and knows his stuff and what he is talking about- he has great creds Melbourne so give him a chance.

Unfortunate, but....
16 Jan 2020 - 12:23 pm

We said the same stuff when the boned the whole Brisbane station in favour of becoming a 2GB repeater, but the ratings don’t lie.

I am so very disappointed that Tony Moclair and Bianca are not returning, until last night I just thought they were on holiday !!
There is NO humour whatsoever in the presenters now

I too have trouble sleeping, and it was really great, the overnight, with wonderful regular callers,……the guy from Stawell, always made you laugh
I know there are troubled times with the dreadful bushfires etc,and people need to share, but ……there is NEVER any humor now
Melbourne has really lost great radio!!
Guess I will have to turn to the ABC talkback, have never listened, but from now……

What a pathetic lot you are, axing the best overnight show I have ever encountered. Tony and Bianca kept me laughing and giving me a reason to smile during the long sleepless nights whilst going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy for 2 years. They were my companions and lifeline. A reason to still be optimistic, a reason that one must go on and laugh again.
Instead you put on this boring Sydney guy who couldn’t even pronounce the country town where my daughter lives.!! What a hoot.I have axed you 3AW and a lot of my friends have as well. You people are a disgrace and have no empathy for your loyal listeners which in my case is 50 years or more. Hoorah to you for the “almighty dollar’ I hope that you will all choke on them.
To Tony and Bianca, you are worth more than those channel 9 idiots all put together. We will follow you closely and will ultimately switch to whichever radio station you will be going to.
The only time we will switch to 3AW is on Wednesday afternoons at 1.30pm. for half hour.
You guys have lost a lot of avid listeners but doing what you did to Tony and Bianca tops it all.

Bob Greenwood
18 Jan 2020 - 9:27 am

Most of the presenters on this radio talk too fast,it’s really hard to understand them. I like a lot of others will be going up and down the dial too find a station I can understand. Channel nine will destroy this station just like it’s done too it TV station.

I CAN NOT believe they have sacked Tony and Bianca!! I really thought they were safe from the wrecking ball.
It was such a unique show in so many ways, that we all loved listening to.
I am really sad about it – as I know countless other listeners are as well.
Bring them back!
I will also miss Gerald Quigley’s segment – he helped so many people – and the fun banter between him, Tony and Bianca.
It beggars belief that management would do this . .

What is everyone listening to now overnight I have tried new guy but do not get him..I miss Tony and Bianca way too much.. 3aw I will for the first time in over 30 years be tuning in to another station and at this point am pretty disappointed at what else there is to listen too. Would welcome some suggestions and preferably not from Sydney. I live in Melbourne and do not need Sydney opinions or local news.

Absolute disgrace that Tony and Bianca have been treated this way have been a keen listener for a few years while working night shift. Listened to the new host for 2 nights before I checked out when Tony and Bianca were due back because he had absolutely nothing to say that interested me or made me laugh! Only to discover that they wouldn’t be back. Will be switching to 1116 or listening to podcasts from now on. Can only hope all the regular listeners give 3aw the boot to.

Please let the public know, the entertainers and presenters of the fire fight who appear to be giving their time for free are able to claim on their tax an amount to cover their costs…as if they have already been paid. Consequently they are not doing it for nothing. e.g. Corals by Candlelight or any other appearances they may be deemed a charity appearance is still a TAX DEDUCTION…….I would be interested in your comment as I have heard from a top performer this is ‘So True’. I await your reply……..Marie

I’m so pleased that Michael McLaren has taken over the night shift
He doesn’t carry on with the inane banter which his predecessors and some of the other current presenters use.
He’s knowledgeable and shows great insight into current affairs
I don’t aim to be awake during his shift, but if sleep eludes me he’s the man to listen to and learn from
Well done and keep up the good work.

Fantastic young radio presenter, love his style his wit and down to earth common sense he won’t please the stupid and the lefty’s of Australia because he is above them. Only complaint I have is that he can cut his caller too early or doesn’t let the caller allow a reply.

I think Michael McLaren is a terrific host of the Midnight to Dawn show on 2GB but he’s wasted there. I am always happy to see him guest on Sky News but I hoped that if he was going National if would have been in a better time slot. I can’t listen midnight to dawn night after night but if he was the host of ‘DRIVE’ it would be welcomed by many. The current host is not offering enough stimulating subjects and it’s a time when many people can listen. I hope Nine Radio rethinks the Drive idea because Michael McLaren has worked that dead time of night for too long, bring him out into the day light.

What a smart and intelligent switched on radio opinions person is Michael McLaren. He represents the commonsense approach with his opinions and his research on current topics is so spot on he really does put our The majority) concerns at ease by debating others with their so called “progressional thinking” and bringing them back down to earth deflating to their left thinking to a common and sensible argument where we as the public can see the proper outcomes.
He is worth his weight in gold!! Love his commentary!

As a Sydney listener, Michael McClaren has been the perfect announcer overnight for a few years now. However, Melbourne listeners seem to be much different from Sydney and Brisbane listeners. I can understand why many Melbourne listeners are not happy with this change. From a Sydney listener’s perspective, it is obvious that Melbourne callers are different. They seem to be more laid back and interested in the ‘old style’ of radio broadcasting. For Sydney listeners this style lacks energy and vibrancy – something that Michael’s program has in spades. My only worry is that Michael might change his style of current news related topics, in depth interviews, humorous commentary and interesting interaction with callers, to appease the Melbourne audience.
