Josh Szeps departs ABC Radio Sydney Afternoons

Josh Szeps – ABC Radio Sydney’s newest, youngest presenter – is leaving Afternoons to launch a streaming YouTube show with Diamantina Media (founded by the team behind the Betoota Advocate), host a live podcast tour and expand his commercial podcast Uncomfortable Conversations.
Szeps’ shift scored a 5.8 share in the last ratings survey (click to expand chart). Survey 7 is out tomorrow.
ABC Radio Sydney Manager Steve Ahern says Szeps’ “mixture of playfulness, intellect and fearlessness is one of a kind. We wish him all the best and hope he can contribute his significant talents to the ABC again in the future.”
On his podcast, Szeps has provocative discussions with the world’s biggest newsmakers. The show has notched up over three million downloads and is one of the most successful Australian interview shows in the world.
Szeps says “I’m an inquisitive person who believes that democracy depends on upsetting the odd apple cart, triggering the odd tripwire, treading on the odd land mine.”
“I’ve had a blast on Afternoons and I’m looking forward to having even spicier conversations on my own turf. The ABC is a cherished institution that deserves more funding and I wish everyone there all the best.”
His last day presenting ABC Radio Sydney Afternoons will be Friday, December 22.
Fair enough he’s leaving radio (a dying medium)
His podcast is fantastic and unfortunately the subject matter covered surely can’t be touched on the ABC.
And I can’t think of anyone better in the country to charge forward into new terrain with a YouTube show.
Can’t wait to keep following you Josh.
You will be very missed Josh! I love listening to you in the afternoons
Good luck to him.
It’s getting harder and harder for radio to keep talent.
Good luck to Josh, but 702 needs to start looking at serious issues instead of constantly asking people to ring in for quizzes, with recipes, nostalgia and other inane content.
Looks like the station is cleaning house for some changes. It needs it.
bring back james valentine hes better in afternoons
I listen to you what a shame it was so much better then listening to Deb knight on 2gb
Kerry I agree on one point – can’t listen to Deb Knight. But can’t listen to Josh either, too self indulgent, too woke. Bring back the previous afternoon presenter James
How dare you Josh! A breath of fresh air in a media world of mostly bs & “follow the leader” wth so few having the guts to stand out & lead – aka our government! I have great faith in my grandchildren’s generation – back to basics – scruples, principles & morals – foundations for a decent society – whoever takes your place has big shoes to fill – best wishes in your next venture!
Thank you Josh. I thoroughly enjoyed your program. Interesting topics, guests and callers. Best wishes for your next career step. Jillian Armidale, NSW
Good Riddance to Josh Szeps and his air of superior self righteousness. I think his personality and the manner in which he forced his views onto people are reflected in his ratings.
So many talented people around the ABC so why did they buy him on the first place. Replacement? How about Rebecca De Unamuno, Tommy Dean, bring Wendy Back, JUDITH LUCY, The Chaser Boys, etc
