April 29: K & J’s Melbourne start date locked in

Reporter

Well, the final piece of the puzzle has fallen into place.

The Kyle & Jackie O Show will go to air in Melbourne on Monday April 29, the pair confirming the date on KIIS 101.1 this morning.

In announcing the date, Kyle Sandilands told listeners “Let me just warn everyone. It doesn’t matter what you’ve heard or what the newspaper or this person or some other radio station says – we’re not here to change your mind. We’re just going to give you a very different type of radio show. I’m not saying the other ones are the worst shows in the world, because they’re not. They’ve been great, but we just offer something different.”

With the first set of radio ratings to be released this Thursday, the long-awaited announcement comes right in the middle of the second survey period of the year.

ARN CEO Ciaran Davis says the relocation of The Kyle & Jackie O Show to its new, purpose-built studio in North Sydney signifies a pivotal moment for the network.

“With the impending launch of The Kyle & Jackie O Show into Melbourne, we look forward to the continued success of the show from its impressive new headquarters.”

“I would like to thank every team member who has worked on this project.”

It heralds a new phase for the network, with WSFM‘s  Jonesy & Amanda to join their ARN stablemates in the coming weeks, and the entire Sydney team expected to operate from the North Sydney premises by the end of April.

So they’ll have been shedding listeners for well over a month while their wronged and beloved competition are smashing it on Nova?! That $200,000,000 is starting to look like it has too many zeros on it when you’ve poisoned one of your biggest markets against you.

No way I will be listening I cannot stand the man and why should Melbournians have to listen to a Sydney based show. I WILL NEVER LISTEN

KJ have been underestimated their whole careers.
-They’ll never beat Merrick and Rosso
-They’ll never be number 1 FM in Sydney
-They’ll never beat 2GB in breakfast
-They won’t take their audience with them to KIIS
KJ’s brand relies on polarisation. Shoutout to the negative comments here who are adding more fuel to the fire of the KJ machine by going on and on about how terrible KJ are.

Lucky for Kyle and Jackie O that for every John Hutson, there’s a die-hard KJ fan.

Kiss 11.1 are bleeding listeners on a daily basis to Nova 100. This will show AN that they misfit what Melbourne listeners want, hence, Nova 100, knew what Melbourne listeners want so Nova 100 signed Jason and Lauren that was a super move by nova 100 bringing listeners to Nova 100 on a daily basis, immediate affect you might say.

@John Hutson … Isn’t it odd that every other market’s cool with getting shows from Melbourne (Hamish and Andy back in the day, Will and Woody, Carrie and Tommy, Marty Sheargold), yet – according to your logic – people in Melbourne couldn’t possibly accept a show broadcast from Sydney. I think you’re letting your personal feelings towards the show get in the way of logic.

@calmdown you do realise those other shows were mainly broadcast in the afternoons, not the mornings in Melbourne, right?

We haven’t really had an issue with afternoon national shows. We want Melbourne made shows on our drive to work. Although those made in the afternoon in Melbourne would be good but we do love our Melbourne made shows in the morning.

Plus J, L and C, are so community minded. They will try to help those in need in Victoria as much as they could also.

They are also hilarious, I’ve never laughed at radio hosts so much as I do with J, L and C (and Jase and PJ before that). I often am having tears from laughing so much, I’d never gotten with other radio shows before).

Do you think that KJ and the network would go ahead with such a big move if they didn’t think it would work. Kyle is 1 of the most astute radio brains in the country. I have no doubt at all that they will succeed in Melbourne. And I for one will be more than pleased that I will be able to hear them on 101.1 instead of through the app as I am now

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.

Sydney based (and styled) programs struggle in Melbourne. There’s a long line of failures of Sydney personalities that tried to make their show work in Melbourne.

Just look at the new studio – bright and trashy with the Harbour Bridge view. It screams Sydney, while it repulses the more sophisticated Melburnians.

And good luck with footy season… any NRL talk (no matter how light weight) will bomb in AFL mad Melbourne – just ask those who worked at Vega!

@John Hutson you’re going to have a conniption when you find out where Nova’s Ricki-Lee, Tim and Joel is officially broadcast from

“more sophisticated Melburnians” … oh god … who’s being trashy now?

How many times have I heard that they’re winners. That everyone keeps thinking they’ll fail, but they prove time and time again they win.

But really – the only thing they do that has had any success is breakfast radio in Sydney.

Every single time they’ve gone to try something else, it has tanked.

I remember Kyle criticising Victoria and the other states during covid! I distinctly remember him saying NSW was always bailing out VIC when VIC asked for help with extra vaccinations. His arrogant belittling of anything not NSW based will be remembered.

To KJ’s credit, they’ve got the biggest radio catch up podcast in the country, so their numbers are probably pretty good for Melbourne. Interestingly, looking at Google Trends for the past 90 days, Kyle and Jackie O’s 2nd biggest interest by subregion is Victoria. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find another radio or TV show that gets as much media attention and talk on social media as they get.

My gut feel is that they’ll do quite well in Melbourne.
