Bill Caralis, owner of the Broadcast Operations Group (branded as Super Radio Network), has passed away.
Born in Greece, Bill left school in his early teens to work in his father’s fruit and vegetable business at the Sydney markets.
After going on to work in property development and liquor retailing, he moved to Tweed Heads in the early eighties and began buying regional radio stations in New South Wales, including Radio 97 (formerly 2MW).
In late 1999, he purchased 2SM and returned to Sydney.
Broadcast Operations Group today operates 42 radio stations.
Bill was known to be a very private person, declining interviews and invitations to radio industry events.
Bill was a brilliant boss. A man who believed in letting his people get on with the business of creating great radio with minimal interference. He was an enigma wrapped in a riddle in some ways and if the chips were down, he was the first person by your side. Generous and supportive, he will be missed by many of us who are fortunate enough to be part of his network.
Sad news for the industry. One wonders what will happen to his empire from hereafter?
Rest in peace, Bill and God wish you also

EDITOR
With John Laws retirement and Ray Hadley’s retirement on 2GB the talkback on Sydney radio stations is not looking good for the next decade. We need to bring back people like Dean Mackin who wasn’t afraid to voice their opinions and discuss controversion subjects in order to increase ratings.
Bill was a brilliant manager but was old-school and not used to controversy.
