Big love for local radio as K rock & bay 93.9 dominate Xtra Insights Survey 1 for Geelong

Reporter

K rock 95.5 and bay 93.9 have further cemented their dominance in the Victorian regional city of Geelong, ranking a clear #1 and #2 in the latest Xtra Insights Survey, ahead of ABC Melbourne.

The sister stations – operated by Geelong Broadcasters – outperformed all competitors across every key daypart (10+) and in their target demographics.

Local radio in Geelong has surged past the 50% mark, with the latest data showing weekly audience reach has grown to more than half the local population, up significantly from 41.9%.

K rock 95.5 is now reaching more than 90,000 listeners weekly and bay 93.9 close behind on more than 89,000.

K rock’s Breakfast team of Tom and Loggy (main photo) added almost 29,000 listeners, with 18.7% of locals naming it the show they listen to most – up a whopping 7.3%. bay 93.9 duo Mill & Nic are the city’s #2 Breakfast team (+6.4 to 16.7%)

K rock’s Tim and Davo lead the market in Drive.

Overall, bay 93.9 recorded the largest gains, and is now the most listened-to station across the workday, claiming the #1 position in Mornings and Afternoons. The station also delivered standout growth on weekends, reaching #1, nearly doubling its audience.

Geelong Broadcasters GM Rachel Patterson said the result reflects a broader shift back to local connection. “We’re seeing audiences actively choosing local, for connection, relevance and trusted voices,” Patterson said. “These results highlight the strength of live and local radio in Geelong, and the role it continues to play in people’s daily lives.”

“We’re incredibly grateful to our listeners, clients and station partners who continue to back local radio. The growth shown in today’s numbers is a testament to that support”.

Don’t know about everyone else but I personally find the Xtra Insights surveys for regional markets that are adjacent to the major metropolitan ones to be a bit sus.

This latest survey for Geelong is no exception, with no representation from Melbourne commercial stations: Most if not all of which, are surely receivable in that market in one form or another?

For a truly accurate picture of markets like Geelong, Wollongong, NSW Central Coast, Sunshine Coast, Mandurah and possibly others, Xtra Insights need to include all (rather than just some, or none) metropolitan commercial and ABC stations as well as the locals in such surveys…with the reporting periods being somewhere in-tandem with the capital city surveys from GfK.

With local radio under 40% of listening, can only imagine how well the Melbourne stations would do. Bet there are lot of AW listeners and lots of Kyle and Jackie fans in Geelong !!

Content directors everywhere should look to Tom & Loggy for what a breakbreakfast show should be.

No self indulgent stunts or gimmicks, just two great humans with natural chemistry who have a genuine connection to their city and people.

Well deserved ratings

SydneyCityTV – you pay for the numbers you can see and release what you like. The good news about this one in Geelong though, there wasn’t much to say about the Melbourne stations, they have listeners in the market, no doubt… but in terms of where you would want to place any spend, it was a two horse race well out in front of the field. Thank goodness! Congrats to local radio for the win again!!! Without the constant “download the listner app” messaging, yeah, so retention focused.
