“Just a girl who loves Aussie music.” Claire Mooney appointed Music Director of triple j’s Unearthed

Claire Mooney describes herself as just a girl in her twenties who loves Australian music.

So, as the newly-appointed Music Director for triple j’s Unearthed, Mooney is enjoying the career equivalent of being the proverbial the kid in a lolly shop.

Having officially taken the reins from Dave Ruby Howe – Unearthed’s Music Director for the past fourteen years – a new era has dawned.

When it comes to discovering, developing, nurturing and celebrating new Australian music, Mooney considers the Unearthed team one of the most important in the country.

With a mission to uncover and promote emerging independent Australian artists, the ABC-owned Unearthed serves as both a digital radio station and an online music discovery platform. Artists can upload their music, which is then reviewed by triple j staff and considered for airplay.

The Unearthed brand has been responsible for discovering some of Australia’s most celebrated musical acts, including Flume, Missy Higgins, Vance Joy, Gang of Youths and Grinspoon.

Previously triple j’s Assistant Music Director and group music programmer, Mooney cut her teeth at Melbourne community station SYN FM, interviewing the likes of PEACE, Miami Horror, Taylor Henderson, The 1975, Stan Walker and Ginny Blackmore.

She was also presenter of The Hoist, a show at the industry forefront, showcasing the best and the newest Aussie music.

Mooney credits music journo and triple j legend Richard Kingsmill with having been a driving force in her career.

Today, Mooney says her connection to triple j has never been more important.
