“I love every one of you.” 3AW’s Philip Brady announces his retirement

After a media career spanning an incredible 67 years, much-loved radio host Philip Brady has announced his retirement from Melbourne’s 3AW and Remember When.

Long time colleague and friend Simon Owens recorded a special message from Brady which was played to listeners overnight.

Brady – who turns 86 this year – said that after more than three decades at the station, “It’s time to move over and give the younger guys a go.”

“I love every one of you. But it is time to move on.”

“Don’t think I will ever forget you.”

Brady has been absent from the show recently.

Immediately after, the phone lines lit up with calls from listeners, congratulating Brady on his incredible achievement.

In 2022, Brady – in his wonderfully warm and engaging way – shared with me his memories of a golden era, revealing to Radio Today he was already a DJ at the tender age of five:

“My grandparents had a wind-up gramophone, playing the old 78 records. I started cutting ads out of the paper and playing records and reading ads.”

Brady also recalled his early days working alongside Graham Kennedy at Melbourne’s GTV 9.

“Graham was always taking the mickey out of me, and that was really our relationship all through the years. He called me Dimples, too, which I hated.”

Brady’s first radio involvement came in the early sixties, after Channel Nine bought 3AK.

“We operated from a caravan. In those days they played LP records, with 12 tracks on them.”

Owens (pictured above with Brady) once described Brady is the best comic feed anyone could hope to work with.

“He sets himself up gloriously with a weak joke, or a plea of ignorance so that his co-host can figuratively slap him across the face with a witty retort. He makes it so easy.”

“I’ve had a dream career for over half my life and it’s all thanks to him.”
