“It’s a disgrace”: George & Paul take aim at 2GB management

Former Assistant Editor

2GB Weekend Mornings hosts George Moore & Paul B Kidd have fired off a broadside at the station’s management for advertising a competitor show.

As reported by Radio Today, Macquarie Media has locked in veteran duo Roy & H.G. for a show on Saturdays during the Cricket World Cup.

Their new show on Macquarie Sports Radio kicked off on the weekend and runs until Mid July.

Macquarie has been advertising the show on its other stations including 2GB, so when George & Paul heard advertising for another show in their timeslot they weren’t too pleased.

They read out a message from a listener that said; “I think its poor form advertising Roy & HG who are on a different station, directly up against George & Paul. This is disrespectful,” said the message.

George & Paul said they “could not agree more” and called the decision a “disgrace”.

Precisely what part of ‘commercial radio’ eludes George & Paul?

@Richard Kazimer

You think Triple M would advertise Hughsey & Kate during Kennedy/Molloy? No
You think WSFM would advertise Kyle & Jackie O during Jonesy & Amanda? No

so…….what part of “competitor” eludes you?

Bizarre you call Roy and HG veterans when George and Paul (whoever they are!!) look positively geriatric.

You’re a weekend show, they’ve found some money to get one of Australia’s finest duos on your other channel to prop it up. Sticking a promo for, essentially “a podcast” that is simulcast on 954 should brighten you up, unless of course you have 0 self confidence. No you wouldn’t put a drive promo from 2day on triple m, but you may say ‘head over to country digital if you want more of something you can’t get here’. And as far as Australian witty & dry sports talk goes, you have none. It doesn’t scream ‘radio’ to me either. But the landscape is changing, know your place in a business and adapt.

This is most def not a new idea. 2GB had similarly planned to use the disastrous ‘lifestyle’ programmed 2UE to expand on the virtues of their sponsor’s offerings by encouraging GB listeners to switch over to their next door broadcasting neighbor and corporate sibling for more info…or, as it should be called, an Infomercial. In the world of dumb ideas this one surely ranks in the top 5. They must have offered Roy and HG a wheelbarrow full of cash to put their genuinely unique and prodigious talent on a station that has fewer listeners than a taxi dispatch radio operator.

Am extremely distressed to hear that George Moore is leaving his weekend show on 2GB….have listened to George on the weekends since day 1.
His leaving leaves a huge hole in my listening pleasure on radio 2GB.
Sincerely hope it won’t be long until George Moore returns to the Air Waves!!

Extremely sad to hear George is leaving 2GB. He’s the only thing worth listening to on radio.
His show was wonderful to listen to and made weekends bearable for many many people.
2GB….what are you doing?

Farewell George Moore, we’ll miss you and your common sense! Management at Macquarie Media have finally wrecked this high rating show. They have continually made changes to this great program since moving it from 2UE to 2GB. The hours of broadcast keep changing and now I suspect George has to be more politically correct and can’t speak openly and honestly about matters that affect the public. It seems sporting programs are the golden child to management these days. George has a huge following and his replacement will be very hard to find. The show may never recover. Good luck Paul, I think you’ll need it! You’re great but it won’t be the same.

What a sad day for radio, George and Paul have been so great for the weekend listening, especially for the people who don’t want to listen to sport 24/7 over the weekend, their programme is what keeps people entertained especially the elderly who don’t have much activity, only to listen to the radio….. To put HG & Roy in their place is terrible, I for one won’t be listening to 2GB/4BC on the weekends…..Management will lose listeners….if this is how they treat their staff then they will lose a lot more….

I am sorry to hear that George is leaving the weekend show. The management have wrecked 2UE and now looked like doing the same to 2GB.
I wonder how the ratings on 2UE are now after the removal of their really good morning show with John and Garry was axed.

I don’t think Paul will manage on his own.

First 2UE and now 2GB. It seems if you are a female and not into sport and/or country and western music then macquarie radio doesn’t give a stuff about you. It’s becoming such a boys’ club. Good luck George, you will be missed.

I have listened to George and Paul since the days when there were on 2ue.This is a brilliant show and made all the more brilliant because of George and Paul. The management of 2gb have made a grave mistake in allowing this great partnership to end as the listeners to this program like me will probably be ending our relationship with 2gb.

Our only hope is that another radio station will see the huge ratings they pull each survey and pick them up.
In closing I am terribly upset by this turn of events and being a long standing 2gb listener it will also be goodbye from me once George and Paul are finished……..and finally I’m thinking it’s too late to fix this so fixing your management problem seems the only solution

One more week to go with George and Paul on 2GB. Thats it for me then….I will not be tuning in to 2GB any more on Sat./Sun. I have no idea why this change has been made – stupidly – by 2GB. More shopping around now for normal, sensible, conservative radio programs. All the very best to George and Paul. God bless you both.

2GB management are the ones who should be terminated.
This was their best show.
$50K insurance is a joke and was intended to get rid of their best presenters.
Is someone trying to turn 2GB into the ABC?
