Elyse says yes! – Mix94.5’s Pete & Kymba with Ben Cousins surprise proposal goes off without (or with?) a hitch

A few weeks ago, Mix94.5‘s Pete & Kymba with Ben Cousins put the call out to Perth if a listener might like their help with a proposal.

The Mix team have had tremendous success with spontaneous, budget and listener driven weddings in the past and this time thought they could assist a little earlier in the process. After an inundation of hopefuls, local arborist Thomas was selected, but not without huge trepidation on his part as he was uncertain whether his partner Elyse would actually say yes.

Thomas’ identity was never revealed on air, instead Mix used voice decoders to share the love story between Thomas and Elyse. This meant that many couples across Perth thought they might be the subject of the forthcoming surprise proposal! For his part Thomas told Pete, Kymba and Ben that he wasn’t sure Elyse would say yes. They have two young children together and she had never expressed any desire to be married. He wanted to make sure that Elyse had a safe exit just in case the response was not as hoped.

The proposal took place at The Old Laundry Bar & Kitchen. Thomas got Elyse there by telling her that he had won a radio competition and all they needed to do was review a meal. If their meal made it to air they would win $5,000. Then a musician started to set the scene by singing a song about them. Unfortunately at that moment their 3-year-old ran off and Thomas had to take off after them, so both missed most of it. Further nervousness ensued as the musician handed the microphone to Thomas and he got down on one knee.

Pete and Kymba emerged from their not very hidden spot to reveal that this was the surprise proposal Perth had been waiting for.

Afterwards Elyse paid tribute to Thomas in the most beautiful fashion, saying:

“For all these years, he’s seen me come from the person that I was to first time mum…he’s seen me through every single walk of life. He knows how to defuse me. He knows how to just hold space for me, and I use that. They don’t make him like that anymore, like his mom did an outstanding job with him. And I’ve always said that if my son and now my daughter can grow up to be half the person that he is, and we’re winning at life he is. I’ve never met anyone like him.”
