Could radio be on the cards for John Waters?
That presence. That voice. It’s hardly any wonder that John Waters has been told over the years he’d be a great fit for radio.
The acclaimed actor and musician is certainly familiar with playing the role of radio talkback host.
In 2005, he was a fictional shock jock in the David Williamson play Influence.

Years later, in another play called Talk, John immersed himself in the character of John Behan, a commercial radio talk show host who pontificates to his audiences about everything that’s wrong with their lives, and how they can fix it.
Has John himself ever entertained the idea of working in radio?
Well, he says it’s not out of the question.
“People have mentioned it to me over the years,” John tells me during our chat on the latest Food Bytes with Sarah Patterson podcast, which drops this Thursday.
“The medium of radio – I think it’s very immediate. It goes into your ear without the visuals and it’s somehow more engaging.”
“I love the radio culture. I like doing talkbacks, when I’m being interviewed. I like it when it’s thrown open to people calling in”
“I feel like radio really is a good glue for the community. Australians, of course, are very, very into their radio still. It’s a big culture here.”
“Who knows? I might sort of grab myself a half hour spot somewhere along the line,” John smiles.
It should come as no surprise at all that John’s latest show – currently touring the country – is about radio.
In Radio Luxembourg, John celebrates the songs of the British Pop Invasion that changed modern music forever, filling the spaces between songs with stories, memories and his passion for music of the era – like a true pirate radio DJ.
Radio Luxembourg features Stewart D’Arrietta and the Chartbusters (main photo with John) showcasing an era of music that remains in the cellular memory of fans over several generations.
Hi with respect to you and to John Waters ( who is no doubt a wonderful Australian Talent ) .
His big voice and the fact that he’s played “jocks” on tv shows does not make him in anyway a perfect fit for radio .
It does in fact show a little bit of disrespect to actual broadcasters who’ve been in the game for the last 40 ,30,20 even 10 years.
It’s not enough that we have to put up with every “blow-in” from reality Tv ,now we are going to get a veteran actor pushed upon us because he’s played a “jock” in a Tv show .
Real radio people don’t get the respect they deserve .
I’m talking about everyone from Broken Hill to Sydney .
Is this a radio facebook page?
Perfect radio show for John to host – a nostalgic show similar to 3AW’s “Remember When” but called “The Olden Days”.
If you know, you know.
