Kyle & Jackie O win FM radio’s top gong, 2GB Continuous Call Team AM’s best

Kyle and Jackie O‘s rise back to the summit of Australian commercial FM radio has been confirmed, with the duo taking out the Best On-Air Team (Metro FM) category at the 2018 ACRAs.

This is the sixth time that Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, who were not in attendance, have won the top gong, following wins in 2006, 2007, 2011, and 2013 whilst at Southern Cross Austereo’s 2DayFM and in 2015 with ARN’s KIIS FM.

2GB’s Continuous Call Team with 2017 Hall of Fame inductee Ray Hadley, and Bob Fulton, Darryl Brohman, Erin Molan, Mark Riddell, Chris Warren & Mark Levy was awarded the award for Best On-Air Team (Metro AM) for the second year in a row.

Last year’s best on-air metro FM team Kate, Tim and Marty didn’t go home empty-handed though, as the show won Best Networked Program and Best Syndicated Program, while Kate Ritchie took out the prize for Best Entertainment Presenter.

For the fourth time, 2GB Drive host Ben Fordham was awarded Best Talk Presenter. The presenter also won the Brian White Award for Radio Journalism.

Meanwhile, 3AW’s Mornings host Neil Mitchell took out Best Current Affairs presenter. He has now won 21 ACRAs across his career.

2DayFM Breakfast’s Grant Denyer was awarded Best Newcomer On Air, and smoothfm’s Melissa Doyle won Best Music Presenter.

A number of new podcast categories were introduced for 2018, recognising the growing importance of the growth in the medium:

• Nova 100’s Chrissie, Sam and Browny won Best Radio Show Podcast.
• Mum Says My Memoir is a Lie by Rosie Waterland (PodcastOne SCA) won Best Original Podcast.
• Modern Babies from Genea and the NOVA Entertainment podcast team won Best Original Podcast Branded.

• Best Sports Presenter – Isa Guha; Triple M, Melbourne

“The awards are a celebration of on air and behind the scenes talent across the Australian commercial radio industry,” said Commercial Radio Australia chief executive Joan Warner.

“Congratulations to the entire industry on providing listeners throughout the year with informative, entertaining, live and local radio.”

Entries were received from 260 metropolitan and regional radio stations across Australia, with stations outside the metropolitan areas are well represented at the ACRAs with more than 200 finalists from country and provincial stations.

The ACRAs covered 37 categories this year. Winners are announced in each category across four areas: metropolitan, provincial, country and Syndication/Production Company and encompass all areas of commercial radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment.

The ACRAs differ from television’s Logie Awards in that they are peer-judged by industry members.
