Bombs Away in Sydney

Staff Writer

If you’ve been listening around to Sydney radio recently you could be forgiven for thinking you’d travelled back in time to 1990.

That was around the time the first Beat The Bomb competition hit Sydney radio.

Now, in 2018, the tried (and perhaps tired) and tested promotion is back, and being run on two radio stations KIIS FM and 2DayFM.

This morning saw 2Day kick off their $100,000 Beat The Bomb contest while KIISFM went one better with a $200,000 competition of their own.

Win your share of $100,000 with 2DayFM!

IT’S BACK! Win your share of $100,000 with 2DayFM’s BEAT THE BOMB! Tune in from 7am weekdays, only on 2DayFM.

So which station played Beat The Bomb first, and does it matter to the listeners?

KIIS will likely benefit most from the competition, as it leads 2Day in the ratings, and is also giving away double the dosh.

The question must be asked though, is KIIS FM blocking 2DayFM with this tactic?

KIIS 1065 $200,000 Beat The Bomb

KIIS 1065 $200,000 BEAT THE BOMB!!! From Monday, play with Kyle and Jackie O every morning at 8am and ALL DAY while you work!!! #SydneysFavouriteCashContest #KeepKIISLoud

What’s not in doubt is that Sydney listeners are the real winners, with plenty of entertaining radio to tune into and more chances to win across both stations.

Beat The Bomb was listed as the number 6 promotion in Radio Todays Top Ten Greatest Promotions ever run on FM radio.

So who played Beat the Bomb first this time round?

KIISFM have done this many times before. Why would 2Day even attempt to run. Weird call.

2DAY did this years ago. KIIS ripped it off.

I think Nova did this too. Maybe 2CH will do in next.

Kyle wins again. KIIS has been promoting beat the bomb for weeks. Why would 104 react with a smaller prize pool?

Kyle and Jackie winners are grinners. They have done this dozens of times. Why would 2Day even bother.

It might be #6 on the ‘ten greatest promotions ever’ on radio but for frequency it would be a clear number 1 as being the most played competition on radio. I left 2Day FM in 2000 after 30 years in radio quoting I didn’t have another Beat the Bomb left in me.

Playing Beat the Bomb on The New 2UW in 1981 seemed fun. Playing Beat the Bomb in 2018 when the terror threat in Australia is “probable” seems like a risk.

Out of the FM’s Nova did this first.
It gets down to who does it best. Go Nova the innovators.
