Talk about an historic survey for Sydney. Even though 2GB Mornings had already received a couple of close shaves this year, who would’ve thought we’d finally see the day Ray Hadley gets knocked off his long-held #1 spot by not one, but TWO FM music stations?!

As per my analysis last survey, it’s clear to me that Smooth 95.3 holds its own on weeknights and weekends while WSFM has the edge with it’s more personality-based output in the key weekday breakfast, mornings, afternoons and drive timeslots. No doubt if one of those two could get the balance right 24/7, we’d be talking about a station that would be able to become a dominant #1 in Sydney for an extended period of time.

With 2UE’s ratings on the way down, it’s clear to me that they need a refocused promotional strategy – perhaps targeting those disgruntled Smooth/WS listeners who just want 60s, 70s & 80s with maybe a splash of 90s, but none of that weird newer stuff.

ACE Radio’s presence in the digital space also lacks something compared to its competitors. WSFM have a top gun, ACRA-winning digital content leader focusing on one station… I feel ACE Radio’s recent move to a not particularly user friendly LiSTNR for streaming isn’t likely to help matters either!

Putting all that aside, can’t say I’m surprised Jimmy & Nath didn’t do anything for 2DayFM during their first full survey. OK, so it’s just *one* survey and things may improve over a more extended period, but at this stage I’m not seeing/hearing much that is likely to move the ratings needle significantly in their favour. Have 2DayFM even done external advertising for Jimmy & Nath at breakfast yet? I don’t think they have!
