Deb Knight confirmed to replace Steve Price on 2GB and 4BC

Staff Writer

The shakeup of Macquarie Media hit new heights on Friday when Steve Price revealed he would not return to the network in 2020.

Nine Entertainment’s head of radio, Tom Malone, confirmed Price’s departure in a memo to staffers just after 5pm.

“I wanted to let you know Steve Price will not be returning to the afternoons slot on 2GB and 4BC in 2020,” he wrote in an email obtained by Radio Today.

“Steve has been a presenter on Macquarie Radio stations for almost 10 years, firstly on MTR in Melbourne before hosting Nights across the network, and finally Afternoons from earlier this year.

“Unfortunately, Steve and I could not agree on the best way forward for 2020.

“I’d like to thank Steve for his terrific contribution to Macquarie Radio, and we wish him well for the future.

Malone ended the email saying, “We’ll be announcing a new host for Afternoons in due course.”

In one of the more surprising talent changes in recent weeks – and there are plenty to choose from – Macquarie Media have confirmed the new host.

Recently axed Today show presenter and widely-respected journalist Deb Knight, who has guested on Macquarie often this year – will host the coveted Afternoons show on 2GB and 4BC in 2020.

“I have worked closely with Deb for 20 years, and I rate her so highly as one of Australia’s most talented and hard-working journalists,” said Malone.

“She has a big career ahead of her in radio and I’m delighted she’s joining the 2GB and 4BC family in 2020.”

Knight begins in the new role on Monday, January 13.

I read that 2GB are trying to target a younger female audience with this move?

I wonder if the new management at 2GB really do understand radio

GB or any AM radio will not attract an audience under 55, that’s how it is.
They can be competitive 55-64 but their audience mostly now is 65+ Nine will learn this the hard way.

Thank goodness I’m in Melbourne ,though to be perfectly honest we listen to community radio in the suburbs and country, no bias ,no huff &puff, just good conversations, music and lots of fun

DK is a political lightweight. How much longer b4 AJ and RH get the punt?
There are plenty of wishy washy stations out there. GB will become another one.

First Chris Smith goes. That fool John Stanley gets nights. Ross is gone. Now Steve. I think Jones will go. That leaves Hadley. You watch Singo might just start a new conservative radio station. Bye Bye 2GB.

I am your “typical” 70yo male 2GB listener. I find Deb Knight lacks the basic radio warmth that is needed to engage male listeners. It shows along side her TV work as well, she doesn’t have the star power needed for 2GB.

Wrong direction for me listen to Jones and Hadley and then turn it off when Deb knight comes on boring to listen to,Should stick to reading the news John Stanley in the right slot But better to see Chris Smith back on air in any slot should not have got rid of him in the first place,Some silly radio expletives just don`t know when they are on a good thing and i think that they should be given a new slot maby on the doll Can only see GB going backwards from here on For me 2UE sounds good.
