Triple M farewells Ugly Phil

Former Assistant Editor

Veteran presenter ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil is departing Triple M and heading over to the UK for a new gig.

Triple M head of content Mike Fitzpatrick made the announcement today, revealing that Triple M’s Afternoons and My Generation host is leaving SCA.

“It’s always sad when we lose someone from the Triple M family, and today I can let you know we’ll be saying farewell to “Ugly” Phil O’Neil. Again,” he said.

“Ugly is heading back home to the UK, where he was the winner of many radio awards, to do a top secret project – no doubt we’ll hear more in the coming weeks.

Ugly Phil started out with Austereo at Sea FM on the Gold Coast almost three decades ago.

In 1993 he hosted ‘Phil O’Neil’s Hot 30’ with now ex-wife Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on Triple M Adelaide, and the show was moved to Fox FM and renamed the Hot 30 Countdown.

The show became popular and Austereo decided to syndicate it nationally, with Phil and Jackie moving to Sydney to broadcast out of 2DayFM.

Since those heady days, Phil has spent multiple stints in the UK, and has also held hosting jobs on Nova 96.9, Triple M Nights, Triple M Sydney Breakfast, 96FM and Star 104.5.

“Phil is a consummate professional and an amazing broadcaster and we’ll be sad to see the back of his bald head.

“Please join me in thanking Phil for his great work and congratulating him on his new project.”

Triple M will announce a replacement for Phil in both his slots shortly.

What a loss for Australian radio! A bloody amazing jock and a role model for many young announcers. Good luck Phil.

What a legend and a loss.. love u Philby. I’ll never forget the day at nova that you replayed a very private message I had left on your voicemail and only just beeped out all the swear words I used … it was absolutely hilarious radio and brave and cheeky and naughty and he is the reason why so many people push the boundaries in radio
And thus keep us entertaining!!!

great broadcaster. will be missed. he seems to be able to build an incredible rapport with who ever he seems to be on air with, listeners and broadcasters alike. he had fantastic interactions with the journalist on mmm and the way he set up jokes his traffic reporter at star had me laughing on a daily basis, no other dj has had me looking forward to news crosses and traffic reports all because of the way he interacted with other people. a skill i wish i could master as he has.

Great broadcaster. Hope to see him back in the future. Have followed him around the place, remember his early days on the Hot 30 and even recall him doing a short stint on 2UE at one stage.

When I really started to enjoy music there was Ugly Phil with The Hot 30 Countdown and throughout the years no matter where I have lived and what I was doing, there was Ugly Phil still giving me all the music I enjoyed, fantastic interviews and a wealth of knowledge that other jocks just couldn’t fathom.
I think we have lost an industry great who’s reputation, knowledge and love of music plus the ability to hold the attention of listeners will never be seen again. Enjoy this new path that life has thrown your way.
