Spencer Howson departs 4BC

Spencer Howson has announced on air on the weekend that Sunday December 10 will be his last day with 4BC.
Howson relaunched 4BC’s local weekend programs at the start of 2021, presenting breakfast on Saturday and Sundays. He was previously with 612 ABC Brisbane for more than two decades where he was the number one breakfast show for 45 surveys.
4BC Content Director, Max Dudley said, “There is no one more passionate about radio and giving opportunities for those who want to be involved in our industry.
“Thank you Spencer for not only your professionalism on the air but for being a wonderful mentor to many around the building.”
You can watch Howson’s announcement above. He said:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed spending weekends with you…but it is time for me to keep moving. I’ve got things I need to do next year, some that I’ve done before, some I’ve never done before. I am opening myself up to whatever the universe wants to throw at me.”

4BC will keep weekends local with an announcement of the new lineup soon.

Big loss for 4BC, makes you wonder what strategy Max Dudley, Greg Byrnes & Tom Malone have for the station.

Bounced Neil Breen from breakfast to drive, he lasted a year before returning to Sydney. Now onto third drive announcer since Nine took over.

Dropped their highest rating talent in Ray Hadley for former tv newsreader Bill McDonald and Ray’s share is likely not to be repeated any time soon.

Imported a music breakfast show to a news/talk station who only did well on the back of strong music programming yet now play two songs an hour which is very jarring to the talk program. Akin to race calls on a music station.

And now, lost interest in Spencer Howson. Max Dudley was champing at the bit to convince Spencer to sign for weekends yet doesn’t renew his contract. Sad situation. Many along with me wondered if Spencer would see out the three years as began to throw caution to the wind, there was a subtle change.

The content Spencer had to broadcast on 4BC wasn’t remotely close to the content that kept him at #1 on ABC breakfast. Hamstrung by paid clients and other uninspiring, non-compelling regular segments; a world away from the hyper local, engaging local info on ABC breakfast.

Here’s hoping for a more successful 2024 for 4BC
