Mike Byrne: From radio redundancy to coach captain
After 30 years in radio, former WSFM Content Director Mike Byrne is now driving buses for a living, and he’s loving every minute.
When Byrne’s CD role at ARN Sydney was made redundant in December last year, he says he knew in his head – and his heart – that it was time for a change.
Today, he’s officially a coach captain for Port Stephens Coaches.
Posting an update on social media, Byrne said “A few people have reached out wondering what the hell I am doing for work now. I didn’t think anyone would give a rat’s … but here we are.”
“When ARN decided they didn’t need a local Content Director for their Sydney radio station, I made a conscious decision to look for work outside of radio.”
“I’ve had a heavy vehicle licence for decades and, apart from some wacky radio stunts that required me to drive some trucks and buses, I’ve never used it. Until now. So I’m now officially a ‘coach captain.’ Driving big ass coaches for Port Stephens Coaches and loving it!”
Byrne says every day behind the wheel is different, and retraining in a totally different field was exactly what he needed at this stage of his life.
“Who knows if I’ll work in radio again, never say never … but for now, look out for me on a road near you … and give me some space, these things are big!”
Absolute respect, good on you Mike, a long way from your days at River 949
Best boss and best human. Proud to call him a friend.
Radio’s loss. Hopefully not permanent.
See the problem is Mike Byrne is a knowledgeable, hard working person who acts with integrity and treats others with respect.

Still getting likes and comments on posts after leaving radio. Most people just move on but this guy has a huge following. Lesson for those who leave radio, keep your name out there you never know. He will be in radio again, you just know it. If he had enough he would go away quiet. Pick him up nova.
Kyles 2IC Coffee Producer has nailed it !!!!!
This is the problem with radio ….you have a guy who programs a number one station and now programs the GPS on a bus. A man who leads a team of broadcasting professionals who is now leading a bunch of old folk retirees on a trip to a winery in the Hunter.
