Matty Johns could make a Triple M Sydney comeback in 2022

The radio rumour mill is beginning to spin, with reports today that former Triple M Sydney Breakfast star Matty Johns could return to the station next year.

Johns has been “sounded out by Triple M” to make a comeback to FM radio, according to a report by Phil Rothfield in his Monday Buzz column in The Daily Telegraph.

Rothfield understands that Johns was approached late last week by station bosses.

As reported by Radio Today in October 2018, the former NRL star and media personality revealed that he would leave The Grill Team at year’s end citing the need for more sleep.

“I need a break from the 4am alarm clock,” he said at the time. “The eight years have been so enjoyable, with plenty of laughs and plenty of great memories, it hasn’t felt like a job at all.”

Last year Johns announced a partial return to commercial radio, as a regular on 1170 SEN.

His show on Triple M was replaced by Moonman In The Morning, with Lawrence Mooney, Jess Eva and Chris Page launching in the market in January 2019.

Triple M Sydney slipped in the latest radio ratings released last week, down 0.3 percentage points to 4.7% overall. Breakfast was up slightly, 0.1 points, also on 4.7% of people 10+.

Radio Today asked Triple M about a reunion with Johns, but are yet to receive a response.
