Back to Triple M for Jay Mueller

Staff Writer

After an absence of almost two years, Jay Mueller is back at Triple M to executive produce the national Kennedy Molloy drive time show.

Mueller departed Triple M Melbourne for 1116 SEN in 2017 after eight years as senior producer of The Hot Breakfast with Eddie McGuire.

He then took up a gig with JAMTV, while also overseeing the Bad Producer podcast production house.

So why the move back to Triple M?

For Mueller, the timing was “right” to take up the reigns once more as a senior show producer.

“The opportunity and timing were right,” he told Radio Today. “I love Mick and had a great time with him on the Hot Breakfast for those years and Jane was always awesome.

“I think they’ve got a great show and it was one of those opportunities that don’t come around very often.

“I’ve effectively worked breakfast hours for twenty years and it’s going to be interesting to see how I adjust to having to be energetic and at your peak at 4 o’clock in the afternoon!”

While the timing and opportunity may have been right, the attraction of “doing something new” also played a part in his decision to return to live radio, even if he’s feeling a little “nervous”.

“It’ll be the first time doing a national show like this and that really appeals to me. I like to do things that pose a new challenge.

“I did Ross & John and Neil Mitchell at 3AW and they were two very different styles of talk-back radio shows on AM.

“The Hot Breakfast was something totally new for FM. And this is new, yet again. And the thing about radio is that what you THINK is going to be the show may not BE the show.

“The best Hot Breakfast that we did were the ones that we thought we had all planned out at 5.30 in the morning and come 8 o’clock, we hadn’t done any of those things and being right there in that moment is really addictive, a lot of fun and unlike any other experience.”

Mueller’s day-to-day focus might now be producing Kennedy Molloy, but he’ll still keep an eye on Bad Producer Productions, which recently reported two million downloads for its suite of podcasts.

Mueller officially starts back at Triple M on Monday (September 16) for a hand-over week with outgoing EP Kim Czosnek, before hitting the ground running after the survey break on September 30.
