“I’m heartbroken.” Christian O’Connell opens up about Jack Post’s departure

Reporter

Christian O’Connell has put to bed any speculation surrounding Jack Post’s departure from his top rating Breakfast show on Melbourne’s Gold 104.3.

It’s now seven years since the show began and Jack – along with Patrina Jones – has been there right from day one.

In a bonus podcast episode from The Christian O’Connell Show, Christian confirmed that Jack left of his own accord and has nothing else lined up.

Christian said Jack called him out of the blue last Wednesday.

“He said ‘I think I need to leave the show.’”

“I told him to take the rest of last week off while he worked through it. But I knew … this is something that’s been troubling him for a while.”

“I was shocked but also at peace with his decision.”

Christian revealed that Jack almost left the show two years ago, saying he has struggled with the breakfast hours.

Of their close bond, Christian said what started as a mentorship has developed into a deep friendship.

“I’m heartbroken, but I’m heartbroken in the right way,” said Christian.

“I’m going to miss him. But I’m really energised by working out what I’m going to do next.”

As to what lies ahead for the show now, Christian said “People don’t know this, but we’ve got some really big stuff happening over the next couple of years for this show, that I’ve been driving and pushing for, for a couple of years. And so Jack was walking out knowing that there were exciting times ahead.”

Christian says he knows what he wants to do next.

“I can reassure everybody, there is going to be no big replacement for Jack Post. It isn’t going to be like that. The next evolution for this show will be something far more subtle.”

“There is going to be no next ‘big hire.’ I have an idea of who I want to bring in next. Not an actual specific person, but in terms of how they would join the show. I’ll just see how that goes.”

A national search will be launched for a possible new team member.

Of his own future and what lies ahead for the show, Christian said “I am here for a very long time. And I mean, many years!!”

ARN couldn’t afford him, more cut backs.

If you’re truly heartbroken, maybe sacrifice 10% of your salary so Jack can stay.

There is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed in our industry, amongst these cost cuts – and that is pay. We’re at a point now where anywhere from 10%-20% of a station revenue of a station (and in ARN’s case, a network) goes to one or two people. This model isn’t sustainable and this is just a race to the bottom. We must have lost 500 jobs in the last 12-18 months and it unfortunately hits the people starting out in the industry or working their way up. And honestly, some of this legacy talent is just not worth the $. You don’t deserve, or need, more money that a heart surgeon for speaking to people for a few hours a day. At this rate, there will be no one left.

Sad seeing this happen, Jack’s great value.
ARN can’t afford 2 expensive Brekky shows in Melbourne though.

Christian earns the huge bucks so he should have supported Jack, taken a pay cut so Jack could stay. Or ARN should have coughed up the extra money to keep Jack especially seeing the show will be networked to Sydney next year. When networks can’t afford to pay the key breakfast show talent, then you know they are in serious financial trouble. Another misstep from ARN.
What a blunder.

I’m just reading the very few comments here and I have to say I’m disappointed that people, particularly one person in the ARN saying Christian should take a pay cut so Jack can stay . How is that fair to anyone . Jack would feel guilty and Christian is made to feel like this is his fault . I have been so offended by some of the comments Jack has made on the radio of late and I don’t understand why he wasnt called out on them.
Christian is a star and deserves every cent he gets.
Expecting someone to lose Income for the benefit of someone else is just wrong .
I won’t be anonymous or use a fake name either.
