How radio and podcasting can learn from each other

Reporter

Radio and podcasting can learn a lot from one another, according to Meryl Klemnow, who’s part of the content team at podcast hosting platform Blubrry.

Klemnow – who went from podcasting to radio – says there are things we can take from both mediums to make each one better.

In an article for Blubrry’s Podcast Insider, Klemnow says having regular segments can be fun and a great ice breaker. “Having something that you can do during your show puts a nice little bow atop your regular programming.”

Klemnow says it’s important to involve your audience at every opportunity.

Whilst podcasters might not have the studio hotline set up that radio does, there are other ways to for listeners to connect, such as via IG stories and email.

As in radio, prize giveaways can also be done in the podcast sphere.

“On the radio, I saw just how much people love a good prize, and even once had two listeners fight over an old Seinfeld DVD. This displayed that people will go out of their way to win something.”

It’s also important to be respectful of your audience.

“In radio, you have a brief to not run over the song or commercial that’s about to come next.”

“Podcasting can feel like we have all the time in the world, but it’s good to edit your show and make sure you are being courteous of your audience’s time.”
