Geoff Field back behind the mic at 2SM

Geoff Field is back behind the mic, starting some casual shifts in Sydney’s 2SM newsroom this week.

After four decades of being on air and then teaching journalism, the former Kyle & Jackie O newsreader tells Radio Today he decided to take a break last year.

“Most of those four decades on air involved early starts on breakfast radio!”

Having purchased a home at Port Douglas with husband Jason, Geoff’s been using the time to travel and work on his health.

“I’ve been enjoying a lot of sleep ins and swimming.”

Now, he’s back in the studio.

“A few weeks ago 2SM News Director Dianne Coveny Garland contacted me and asked if I could work some shifts over the next few weeks.”

“I jumped at the chance and was back on air this week.”

“I’m only 61 and don’t want to retire. I have been working non stop in radio since I left school in Nowra at the age of 16.”

After departing 2Day FM in 2016, Geoff took on a new role as News Director of Sydney community radio station 2SER.

He says it’s been a pleasure seeing his former students – including Radio Today 30 Under 30 winner Rhiannon Soliman-Marron – go on to carve successful media careers.

“I feel I was very lucky to have such an amazing bunch of students in my time at 2SER. Many have gone onto great radio careers including Rhiannon, Micaela Savage, Zac De Silva, Dona Sirimanne, Tina Quinn, Nick Parmeter and many more.”

“Others have made it to television including Hugh Hogan, Myles Houlbrook Walk, Alexander Lewis and Tys Occhiuzzi.”

“Last year because of the Covid situation 2SER had to let me go, so I’ve been travelling and spending time in Queensland.”

As for the future – nothing is set in stone.

“I’m enjoying being back in a newsroom, but I’m not sure whether I want to eventually return to newsreading or maybe teaching.”

“Who knows? Maybe I’ll be able to do a bit of both and still enjoy my new found love of travel!”
