Shepparton Takeover kicks off

The ABC and VicHealth’s first regional Takeover youth program kicks off in Shepparton today, with 44 young winners sharing their stories across the ABC.

Takeover Shepparton runs from 16 May to 20 May with stories featured on triple j and ABC Radio.

Over the past few months, a team of ABC producers has been working in the region with more than 1000 young people. From that pool, 44 winners were selected to work with the ABC Takeover team to produce stories for the ABC’s radio, digital and social media platforms.

The stories highlight the diversity and bravery of young people in the Goulburn region. They tell the stories of reconnecting with cultural identity through traditional dance; working with Yorta Yorta elders to remember identity; starting a honey business and twins helping each other through cystic fibrosis.

The ABC’s Director of Regional & Local, Judith Whelan, said the ABC was committed to showcasing the voices of the next generation of storytellers.

“We’re so proud to be focusing that commitment on the community of Shepparton to amplify powerful stories of young people in the region.”

The Takeover program has been running in Melbourne since 2020 and this marks the first time the ABC and VicHealth have taken the initiative to a regional centre.

Executive, Future Healthy from VicHealth, Sarah Loh, said: “Takeover is a powerful platform for young people to share their experiences and passions. VicHealth is proud to partner with the ABC to help amplify these outstanding young voices and their ideas for change.”

The Takeover Shepparton winners will have the opportunity to take part in leadership and networking events, and the chance to share their ideas for change.

Following the summit, The Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) will run a grants program to help community organisations adopt the ideas developed by the summit participants.

FRRR CEO Natalie Egleton said: “I’m humbled knowing that these are our leaders of tomorrow. They are proof of how brilliant, resilient, and resourceful young people are in addressing current and future challenges. FRRR is inspired to be part of their journey and to invest in their ideas so they can become a reality.”

Takeover Shepparton winners will be featured on the ABC all this week. Find out more information about the program at: abc.net.au/takeovershepparton.

Shepparton locals are invited to meet the Takeover winners at the Youth Ideas Launch on Friday 20 May at 10:30 am at St Paul’s African House.
