SEN teams up with ARN in landmark SA footy deal.

Footy on the radio in South Australia is set for a shake up, with Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) teaming up with ARN’s Cruise 1323 in a landmark new footy deal.

SEN has today confirmed it has elected to syndicate and sub-license a portion of its AFL radio AM rights with Adelaide’s popular AM station, Cruise 1323, for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

From next season, three matches each weekend from SEN’s syndicated AFL Nation call will also be heard on Cruise, which is part of ARN’s Pure Gold Network.

Drive show Sportsday with Malcolm Blight and David Wildy will also move to Cruise 1323, as well as being simulcast on SEN’s own SEN SA 1629am.

Sports Entertainment Network Chief Executive Craig Hutchison says the partnership is a big win for footy audiences in South Australia.

“To supply and partner Adelaide’s top rating AM station and have our AFL Nation calls heard across Cruise 1323 for the first time is a tremendous outcome.”

“At SEN SA 1629am we are about the fan, and to take our calls to a whole new audience is a great outcome.”

ARN Chief Executive Officer Ciaran Davis adds “Sport is such a huge part of the Australian psyche, and we are so thrilled to cater to listeners wants and needs in Adelaide via this partnership with SEN.”

While footy fever is beginning to heat up in the Top End.

As part of the recently announced radio rights, SEN Top End 1611am will air at least five AFL games each week of the home and away season, plus all finals. The broadcast will come via SEN’s AFL Nation.

And SEN Top End 1611am has also confirmed it has extended its deal to call NTFL matches this summer.

Seems like footy overkill to me. If ARN is making money in the short term off SEN with the Cruise1323 arrangement, that part adds up. However the disruption of the successful Cruise1323 music template, may prove to hurt them in both ratings and revenue in the long run. SEN may increase their ‘reach’ at the expense of ‘share of audience’ for Cruise. You could find the largely music based Cruise1323 audience discover ‘their music’ on a nearby Community Station, such as Adelaide’s 88.7 Coast FM. Time will tell !

Stuff your footy listening to music is what I like not listening to some commentators raving on about football. This is a radio station with the old hits. I am not happy.

Football chat at 6pm weeknights, just when I’m preparing a meal or broadcasting football on a Sunday afternoon is far from my expectations of Cruise 1323. I’ve already expressed my thoughts directly to the station. Who surveyed the listening audience in SA to discover if there was support for this change? Now we have people opinionating over the airwaves everywhere. Nothing but “noise”. There is little choice for the music lovers of the genre Cruise radio 1323 gives us, except for Coast FM. Looks like I’ll be turning to Spotify.
