Nova Brisbane’s Handball Blitz hits Suncorp Stadium

Brisbane’s best handballer was decided on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium in front of a crowd of 42,612 during the halftime entertainment at the Brisbane Broncos versus Melbourne Storm match.

The final match was the end product of Nova 106.9’s popular Handball Blitz promotion that swept across South-East Queensland schools.

The best handball player from the southside of Brisbane, Caleb, 11, went up against the best northside player Henry, 12, on a handball stage set up in the middle of the field.

Over the past 11 weeks, the team from Nova 106.9 in Brisbane has been travelling across South-East Qld, hosting handball competitions in over 50 schools to find Brisbane’s best handball champion in ‘Ash, Luttsy & Susie O’Neill’s Handball Blitz’.

Back in May, Nova 106.9 produced thousands of limited-edition Nova handballs to supply the growing trend. Schools could then register online to have Nova 106.9’s Sports Presenter Mitch Lewis host a Handball Blitz at their school, which was live to air each day on the Nova breakfast show.

Nova Group Program Operations Director, Brendan Taylor, was inspired by his two handballing sons. He said the station had so much interest in the promotion with serious engagement from listeners.

“It was great to see the culmination of such a popular station promotion in such a huge way,” said Taylor.

“To see Handball Blitz on the big screen and the faces of the two finalists light up the LED screens around the field at Suncorp Stadium was unbelievable, creating lifelong memories for our two finalists.”

Caleb, representing the southside St Bernadine’s, beat Henry representing the northside Brighton State School after a very entertaining and close match.

League legend Alfie Langer was on hand as a water boy and Olympic legend Susie O’Neill was on hand to help calm their nerves.
