Merrick Watts: “I think I’ll take a year out of radio next year”

Staff Writer

Triple M Sydney’s Merrick Watts has confirmed his plans to retire the Merrickville drive show at the end of the year and will take a break from radio.

Speaking to Fairfax Media, Watts said the decision to depart the station wasn’t made lightly and comes after joining Triple M in 2015 following a stint on 2Day FM brekkie.

“It just feels like the right time,” he told reporter Broede Carmody. “At the start of this year I started my solo standup show, and I was in Adelaide and thought, right, this will be my last year [of radio]. It just evolved that way. You’ve always got to take the time [to decide].

Watts’ agreement with the SCA-owned network will expire late 2017, with rumblings and rumours already circling corridors, suggesting that a possible national drive show could be in the works for Triple M in 2018.
