Loz O’Callaghan: “Average is a very nice place to be”

“You can’t polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter.”

She might be an ACRA winner and part of Adelaide’s top rating Triple M Breakfast team, yet Loz O’Callaghan describes herself as ‘ferociously average.’

In an interview with The Advertiser (subscription required), O’Callaghan is disarmingly down to earth as she opens up about the huge year she’s had.

After being recruited from community station Fresh 92.7 to join Mark ‘Roo’ Riccuito and Chris ‘Ditts’ Dittmar at the Ms, O’Callaghan’s career has been on an upward trajectory – the trio going on to claim the mantle of No. 1 Breakfast show in the final metro survey of the year.

O’Callaghan topped off an extraordinary year by winning Best New On Air Talent at last month’s Australian Commercial Radio Awards.

She says when she called her parents to tell them, it was like she’d won the Nobel Peace prize.

The 32-year-old tells the Advertiser “It’s kind of like all of that stuff is very nice. But I think the reason why it works, me being in the show, is that I just am who I am. And who I am is just a normal person.”

O’Callaghan says media is a strange industry, one that makes people seem ‘fancier’ than they actually are.

“I really don’t like that idea,” she says.

“Average is a very nice place to be. I’m very happy with average.”
