It started as a dream: 89.9 TheLight celebrates 20 years
It started over 40 years ago, as dream.
A small but determined group of Melburnians had vision: They wanted a positive and uplifting radio station that reached out to every single home and every single person in Melbourne.
In 2001, after more than 20 years of planning and lots of hard work, the group was granted a community broadcasting licence.
One year later, on 2 December 2002, 89.9 TheLight began broadcasting full time on the FM dial.
This week 89.9 TheLight celebrates 20 years on air.
Since first going to air, the station has broadcast every single minute, every single hour of the past 20 years – all thanks to the listeners who’ve built the station and kept it on the air.
Lucy Holmes from the Lucy and Kel Breakfast Show tells Radio Today “It’s been the most incredible privilege of my life to be the breakfast host on this station for almost 14 of those 20 years.”
“Not only is TheLight the largest community station in the country with almost a million listeners, it is the most incredible force for good here in Melbourne.”
“The reason I’ve dedicated my life to positive radio, is because of all the lives changed, transformed and made better by this station – it’s absolutely incredible.”
“From all our partnerships with amazing charities like The Salvos and providing Christmas hampers to those doing it tough, to things like CBM Miracles Day when our listeners give sight to the blind in the developing world (so far our listeners have given sight to 76,000 people around the world over the last ten years) to our current partnership with Foodbank and providing meals to those in need this Christmas, to our initiatives like TheLight Careline where people can ring and chat to someone if they need just need a listening ear.”
“This station does extraordinary work trying to be a force for good for people here in Melbourne who need hope, and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the next 20 years!”
