Going gangbusters: One of radio’s remarkable stories of 2022

As we look back on a jam-packed year, Adelaide’s FIVEaa stands out as one of the remarkable radio stories of 2022.

Just three surveys ago the ABC was the city’s top-rating local station, while FIVEaa found itself at the bottom of the pile.

But now it’s going gangbusters. In the final survey of the year, FIVEaa was the second highest-rating station overall behind regular leader Mix 102.3, and stretched its lead in Breakfast.

It’s a huge turnaround in a relatively short space of time.

Speaking to our sister publication RadioInfo, NOVA Entertainment Head of Programming Ben Latimer paid tribute to the FIVEaa Breakfast team of David Penberthy and Will Goodings:

“What a brilliant end to the year. To see David and Will in Breakfast sit at 16.5 – that’s a record high result for them. It’s just a world class show. It’s a fantastic listen.”

Latimer says the newly-retired Leon Byner enjoyed a very fitting send off, posting an 11 share in Survey 8.

“Right across the schedule you’ve got Drive up – in a non-AFL book. Nights are up.”

“It is the dominant news and talk station in Adelaide again.”

Elsewhere, NOVA’s new Melbourne breakfast team of Ben, Liam & Belle is already on air, and the network is confident the show will perform well in its new market in 2023.

And the early feedback to Radio Today from this listener is positive:

“Ben and Liam are sounding fantastic on Nova in Melbourne. Kudos to Nova for backing these talented broadcasters.”
