CRA launches 2024 Australian Podcast Report

Reporter

Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) in partnership with Triton Digital has launched the Australian Podcast Report for 2024, highlighting a rapid rise in podcasting across the nation.

CRA says that with a 37% increase in listenership over the last two years, podcasts have firmly cemented their position as a dominant force in Australia’s media landscape, engaging on average nearly 6 million weekly listeners.

Lizzie Young, Chief Executive Officer, CRA said “As podcasting continues to evolve, it offers exceptional opportunities for advertisers to connect with audiences in meaningful and measurable ways.”

Podcasting’s reach remains strong, with 48% of younger Australians (18-34) listening in the last month. Additionally, 37% of Australians aged 35-54 and 21% aged 55+ also tuned in over the past month.

Mobile devices dominate podcast consumption, with 94.2% of listeners tuning in via this platform.

Society & Culture, True Crime and News are the dominant genres. See full report here.

An earlier version of this information contained an incorrect figure for average monthly downloads. Daryl Battaglia, SVP of Measurement Strategy at Triton Digital explains that the report now states that “large podcasts—those with 100,000+ monthly downloads in Australia—account for 63% of all downloads. This figure reflects the full universe of Triton-measured podcasts with listeners in Australia. The data underscores that while the majority of impressions in a podcast advertising buy come from large podcasts, the podcasting landscape remains diverse, with a robust long tail of content.”

Replying to inquiries from Radio Today, Commercial Radio and Audio told us: “The data presented in the Australian Podcast Report originates from and is the sole responsibility of Triton Digital. An earlier version of the annual report, which is comprised of data from the full universe of Triton-measured podcasts with listeners in Australia, has since been updated to provide further clarification on downloads in the Australian market. CRA does not produce, alter, or control the reported data in any capacity.

The press release and report presentation were based on the data provided on the Triton Digital report. Thanks to our readers who spotted the incorrect figures.

“63% of podcasts now achieving over 100,000 average monthly downloads in 2024”

Does Radio Today ask any follow up questions or we just printing stuff like this?

I think whoever wrote the press release that has been republished here misinterpreted the statistics.

The report says the following:
“Podcast listening has proven to have scale with podcasts garnering more than 100,000 average monthly downloads in 2024 representing 63% of all downloads.”

It’s pretty confusingly worded but I believe it is saying that podcasts with high listenership (100K+ monthly downloads) are taking 63% of total podcast downloads.

The write up here seems to suggest that 63% of podcasts are getting 100,000+ monthly downloads which is simply not true by any metric.
