Akermanis attacks Stynes on Mix
Former AFL start Jason Akermanis started his new radio gig today as a football reporter for Mix 92.7 on the Sunshine Coast…..and has been fired the same day.
Speaking with Breakfast hosts Mark Darin and Caroline Hutchison, Akermanis has created a storm of controversy over his comments about the late Jim Stynes, who died this week in Melbourne.
Akermanis commented on Stynes saying "he was a legend of the game and did a great job and wonderful things with kids, but you know there are a bunch of people who have done just as much who don't get any recognition. I just think it's a bit out of kilter.'
"He got a State funeral – do all football players get a State funeral? There's something about it all that just made me feel uncomfortable. Jim's good but is he that good?''
Akermanis described the outpouring of grief over the passing of Stynes as "overkill" going on to say that he "was a nasty man in his day. He had a nice turn of phrase and he made sure you knew how he felt".
You can listen to the audio of the Akermanis' comments below.
More comments from Akermanis about Stynes: "I saw my mum die of cancer in the exact same way and she was as human as anybody else. Jimmy dying is sad, but give me a break. My mum was great lady too but she wasn't pure. Jim was a human being like anybody else full of good things and bad things. I'm not bagging the guy, I'm just saying he was a human being.''
Akermanis has been torn to pieces on twitter. Melbourne Demons player and former captain Brad Green tweeted "Aker, you are a tosser!!! Show respect", while former Melbourne, now Carlton player Brock McLean said "Jason Akermanis… Show some respect. Regardless of how you feel, never speak ill of the dead. Lowest of lows."
Richmond legend Matthew Richardson said "I think Aker may have finally done his dash. #low"
Late this afternoon Southern Cross Austereo fired Akermanis from his 'day-old' role as football reporter for Mix 92.7.
