A sparkly ray of sunshine gone: RIP Cal Wilson

Reporter

Australia’s entertainment industry is in shock following news of Cal Wilson‘s death at the age of just 53.

A post on the Cal Wilson Facebook page reads:

“We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends in hospital after a short illness.”

“Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.”

In 2007, Wilson co-hosted the Nova Drive time radio show The Akmal Show with Cal Wilson.

The program aired on Nova FM Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Prior to that role, Cal was a regular guest on the Triple M program Get This, hosted by Tony Martin and Ed Kavalee.

In 2009, Wilson co-hosted Mornings on Melbourne’s Nova 100 with Dylan Lewis.

Former Fox FM Breakfast host Tracy Bartram is among many to pay tribute, posting on social media “I am devastated to learn that the brilliant Cal Wilson has died at the age of 53.”

“She was a shiny, sparkly ray of sunshine who lit up every space she occupied. Today is all we have. Rest in peace, Sister.”

A post from Gold 104.3 announcer Dave ‘Higgo’ Higgins reads “I simply cannot believe what I’m reading. Thank you for always being so incredibly nice and telling me you loved my shoes.”

“Anyone who ever met her will know how genuine, caring, funny and just plain nice she was.”

News presenter Kerrie Turner also joined the tributes, saying “I have no words. Working with you was always so much fun.”

Cal also featured on Broad Radio, which says “We are utterly devastated that brilliant, vibrant Cal Wilson has died, after a short illness.”

“We were blessed and honoured to have Cal with us many times on Broad Radio. Such a glorious shining light, so kind and generous, and so clever and funny. A true artist and creative being. And a passionate supporter of women. She touched thousands and thousands of lives with her incredible talent and very beautiful soul.”

“It is impossible to fathom this loss. Our hearts are broken and overflowing with love for you.”

Originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, Wilson moved to Melbourne in 2003 to star in the TV sketch show Skithouse.

She went on to become one of Australia’s most popular comedians.

Cal is survived by her husband and son.

I am stunned to read such sad news. I woked with Cal at dmg Radio back in 2007, she could light up the room her presence, truly a talent gone way to soon.
