World champion surfer Molly Picklum joins Gina & Matty as the Central Coast celebrates a homegrown hero
This morning on Star 104.5’s Gina and Matty Breakfast show, Matty sat down for an in-person, exclusive interview with Central Coast local and newly-crowned world surfing champion Molly Picklum.
22-year-old Molly took home the title at the WSL (World Surf League) finals in Fiji just days ago and joined the show ahead of her return home to the Central Coast, chatting about the whirlwind that has been her past few days and opening about up mental strength and adversity.
In order to celebrate the Central Coast superstar – Star 104.5 rebranded to Picklum 104.5 and throughout the morning local businesses called up to rename their menu items after her.
The Morning Coffee Society had the Molly Magic, Shelley Beach Golf Club renamed the 1st hole at its course Molly’s Retreat and the Mayor of Central Coast Council even said he’d take Matty’s idea of renaming the Central Coast Highway to Molly Picklum Way to the next council meeting!
Gina & Matty then spoke with Molly’s pre-school teacher – who revealed that she’s always had ‘great balance’
Matty: She is Australia’s newest world champion. But not only that, she’s the Central Coast newest world champion. Molly Picklum..Pickles, you’re the world champ mate!
Molly: I know and I’m that happy to be back talking about it, sharing it with the Central Coast and all of Australia. It just means the absolute world to me…I’m stoked to be talking to you guys. Obviously, you guys have been supporting me through it all, so I’m glad to be here.
Matty: What does it mean for you to do this for the Central Coast?
Molly: Yeah, it’s really hard to put into words…it’s a full community behind me, that’s like, raised me through this, and we’re just like, such a surf loving community on the Central Coast. And to do it for them and bring it back. Is just like, the best feeling!
Gina & Matty for Breakfast can be heard from 6am to 9am on Star104.5 on the Central Coast Sydney. Listeners can stream the show live or catch up with the daily podcast by downloading the Nova Player.
