When your breakfast show becomes a meme: K rock’s ultimate April Fool’s Day gag
As we all know, April Fool’s Day gags on the radio are as old as beat the bomb and the secret sound.
In recent years, programmers have tended to put them in the too ‘naff’ and/or too hard basket.
That’s why it’s nice when a little gem pops up to brighten everyone’s (April Fool’s) day.
This morning, the K rock Breakfast team of Tom, Lingy and Loggy woke up Geelong and the Surf Coast in their usual way but with one exception.
Instead of a rolling playlist of K rock-approved bangers, they played Nickelback’s seminal 2005 hit ‘Photograph’.
It was deadpan delivery and zero acknowledgment of what was occurring from 6am right through until the end of the show at 9am.
Listeners were at first bemused, then concerned, then amused, then annoyed and then amused again as the song played a total of 12 times across the three-hour show.
The final cherry on top of a very successful stitch up came after 9am when Workday announcer and Music Director Chris Holland took over.
Just as listeners thought the pain was over, he played ‘Photograph’ one last time before coming back with Tom, Lingy and Loggy and forcing them to come clean.
Show anchor and K rock Content Director Tom Lewis said “The phones were ringing a fair bit before 7 and we managed to answer those, but once more people woke up and realised what was happening, we had full boards for the rest of the show and we were swamped. It was hilarious how concerned people were that it was either a glitch or that it was only happening to them. We almost had to lead some of them by the hand right to the answer.”
As for Nickelback’s place in the general K rock rotation, Lewis said: “We play them a bit but I’d imagine Chris will give Chad and the boys quite the rest after this. Anyone for some Creed?”
I actually love that song so much.
