Ugly Phil’s in for Mike Hammond on WSFM Sydney

Staff Writer

Phil O’Neil has landed at Australian Radio Network’s WSFM Sydney.

After another stint on-air in London, O’Neil returns to Australia and will cover Mornings for the holidaying Mike Hammond from today (July 13) for two weeks.

WSFM content director Mike Byrne said when he found out Ugly Phil was available that, “surely there must be other options?” Apparently not.

The former Hot 30 Countdown host tells Radio Today he’s planning to “show off some of the new skills” he’s acquired in the UK, including the Fleetwood Mac song intro he’s mastered.

After Triple M announced O’Neil’s departure in April last year it was confirmed he was returning to London to host Breakfast at Fix Radio and the national Planet Rock Network.

Ugly Phil started out with Austereo at Sea FM on the Gold Coast almost three decades ago.

In 1993 he hosted Phil O’Neil’s Hot 30 with now ex-wife Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on Triple M Adelaide, and the show was moved to Fox FM and renamed the Hot 30 Countdown.

The show became popular and Austereo decided to syndicate it nationally, with O’Neil’s and Henderson moving to Sydney to broadcast from 2DayFM Sydney studios.

As they always say in radio, never take holidays.

Listen to O’Neil’s creative song hooks and more this morning from 9 at WSFM Sydney.

It’s a case of “De Ja Vu”. Didn’t Phil fill in for Mike on 2SM back in 1987, when Phil was the station floater.

Joking aside, it’s great that these two talented men are still creating great radio after all these years.
