Laneway has just wrapped up in Singapore and New Zealand.
The Singapore show on Sunday January 27 at The Meadows, Gardens By The Bay, drew 10,000 where over eight years it’s developed a reputation to discover new acts.
The Auckland show on January 29 was a sell-out with 13,000, and was opened by the country’s new Prime Minister Jacinda Arden.
She walked around the site digging the acts and posed patiently for countless selfies.
The mercury hit 28 degrees, and Amy Shark dispensed with her leather jacket within the first song.
But an hour-long wait at the gates after a malfunction of sorts saw a couple of patrons fainting.
Among the highlights were Mac DeMarco getting the whole place doing a sing-a-long, expatriate Noah Slee returning after a lengthy absence from his base in Berlin and joined by rapper MeloDown, and The War On Drugs in a celebratory mood after scoring Best Rock Album at the Grammys.
California’s Anderson Paak made a memorably rowdy NZ debut, Sylvan Esso singer Amelia Meath was in fine fettle despite telling the audience that she lost her voice on the flight over, and Pond got the crowd onside by calling New Zealand as “Australia’s more woke neighbour.”
