TEN boss clarifies AM radio comments

Staff Writer

Russell Howcroft, the TEN network boss, has called Neil Mitchell's program on 3AW to clarify the comments Adam Boland made last week.

Speaking about the new Wake Up breakfast show, Boland said that viewers have told him Sunrise and Today "are seen as AM radio, complete with the shock jocks that come with that," implying that the new show is more like FM radio.

Howcroft has responded saying that, "not by any stretch, is that trying to be a criticism, in fact we all know AM radio is a massive success, that's just about trying to come up with some shorthand to articulate the difference and I think that would be understood by the consumer.

"It's not about being negative about AM, as you know Neil, I am personally a massive fan of AM and we also use AW to advertise our programs."

Mitchell then pointed out, "I was just a bit worried that he was admiring FM that he mightn't have realised that AM breakfast….massively out-rates FM"

Also, interesting to note the launch for Wake Up is being promoted as November 4, but in the interview, Howcroft refers to the launch being "in a weeks time" (Monday October 28), "6 days to go," said Russell.
