Spotify launches miniplayer within Facebook app

Spotify's in-app miniplayer on Facebook

Spotify has teamed up with Facebook to integrate an in-app music player into the social media platform, allowing users to listen to music and podcasts without switching between apps.

The miniplayer is being rolled out to Facebook’s iOS and Androids apps from this week. To use the player, users can tap on the song or podcast episode that has been shared to their Facebook News Feed. Spotify Premium users can stream tracks directly, while free users will be required to listen to ads and music on shuffle.

“Over the past year, we’ve seen how social media continues to be an incredibly important way to connect with friends and loved ones – especially when gathering in person is more challenging. Audio continues to be something that brings people together,” a Spotify blog post read.

Facebook users will also be able to play songs through verified artists posts or within user-uploaded videos that contain licensed music.

The function is available to 26 other markets, with more countries to receive it in the coming months.
