Rumours circulate as Jason Morrison leaves 7NEWS

Jason Morrison is leaving his position as Director of 7NEWS after eight years in the role, and rumours have begun circulating that he may be crossing over into the radio industry.

Announcing the departure recently, Seven Network’s Director of News and Public Affairs, Craig McPherson said, “I want to thank Jason for his tireless efforts over the past eight years.”

“He leaves the team in very good shape as we move home base and into a new era for 7NEWS. He departs Seven with tremendous goodwill and best wishes for his next venture,” he said.

McPherson also announced the appointment of Neil Warren to replace Morrison in the role of 7NEWS Director in Sydney, with current Deputy News Director Michael Coombes replacing Warren as 7NEWS Director in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The speculation about a move into radio comes from The Australian’s Nick Tabakoff, who noticed a convenient opening at the ABC as Head of Radio, but Ray Hadley, a long-time friend of Morrison’s, says the rumours are nothing but that – rumours.

On-air, Hadley said, “I think you’ll find that he’s just simply exhausted.”

“He has been there for a number of years. Hes the sort of bloke that tends to make sure he’s on top of everything, and I think his family, his children are growing up without seeing much of him because he’s always at work, so he’s just made a decision that he needs to find something thats a little less demanding,” Hadley said.

Neil Warren and Michael Coombes start their new roles Monday, 19 June.
