Red Symons’ son passes away after brain tumour battle

Former Assistant Editor

Red Symons‘ son Samuel has died, succumbing an aggressive brain tumour at age 27.

Red, who last year lost his long-standing job on Breakfast radio at the ABC, said in June that Samuel’s recent treatments had gone well.

Samuel was first diagnosed with the tumour when he was just four years of age. He was also operated on for thyroid cancer at age 11 and developed another brain tumour when he was 16.

Red has worked as a contributor for 3AW this year, and Macquarie Media issued the following statement, read out by colleague Neil Mitchell on his Mornings show.

“It is with the deepest sadness Red announces the passing of his beautiful son Samuel Symons.

“Samuel passed peacefully overnight surrounded by his family.

“We ask that you please respect the privacy of Red and his family at this very sad and difficult time.”
