Ratings: first survey results for 2025
It’s survey day, the first survey results for the year have now been released.
Radio Today’s coverage begins at 9:30 this morning.
The spotlight will continue to fall on Melbourne, will there be any change in that market this year?
You’ll recall that in the final survey of last year, Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren extended their lead as the city’s #1 FM Breakfast show, and currently hold an 11.5 share. KIIS FM’s Kyle & Jackie O, on the other hand, fell to 5.0, leaving them sixth among the FM stations and – to put things in perspective – only marginally ahead of AM sports station SEN 1116.
How did it all pan out? While KIIS, Triple M and Nova were fighting it out for their target demographics, Gold 104.3 passed them all to top the FM share this survey
The survey was conducted by GfK for Commercial Radio Australia between Sun Jan 19 to Sat Mar 1 2025, which included the summer cricket season and the inauguration of US President Trump.
Commercial radio now reaches a total audience of 12.5 million Australians. In-car listening remains a pivotal platform, increasing by 6.5% year on year with 10.3 million Australians listening in cars weekly. Over 3.1 million Australians listen to commercial radio via streaming.

To find them at exactly 9:30, do we go to GFK website or CRA Website?
lol…… @ciaran davis ….. the lauren joyce era is off to a flying start …… seriously ….. oh let me guess ……..
please let this end ….
oh deary me, this isnt good – cruise absolutely flopped
small increase in melbourne was great for KJ
“ARN would be happy with K and J in Melbourne” ??? Yeah right i can hear the champagne corks popping right now…..Give me a break lolololol
Not surprised that MMM Brisbane had a huge drop in drive with the axing of the local show.
When is 2SM allegedly joining?
Typo for Nova’s freq here – should be Nova 106.9

What about Nova Perth Breakfast….what a share!
From a Sydney perspective, 2GB and Smooth 95.3 are the biggest winners from Survey #1 by a considerable margin. Given that Ty Frost was only 0.2% behind Mark Levy, I’d be willing to predict Smooth will eventually make history and become #1 outright during at least one survey this year.
Brekky remains the one timeslot Smooth 95.3 are unlikely to ever become a #1 outright rater in though. Which isn’t to say Bogart Torelli’s “More Music Breakfast Show” isn’t a decent performer (because it definitely is), but you can’t help but wonder if they’d be in an even better ratings position with something personality-led at brekky while the rest of the day remains “More Music, Less Talk” as it is now.
No major surprise that 101.7 Sydney went down as a result of the WSFM > GOLD rebrand, but with ratings not falling as low as I may have expected and the now-departed Ugly Phil appearing taking the biggest ratings hit, perhaps they’ll do OK later in the year just as we saw during 2024. Having said that, ARN are likely to be in for a rude shock if they think Christian O’Connell’s Melbourne ratings success can eventually be replicated in Sydney at the expense of Jonesy & Amanda!
2DayFM’s fall during the morning/arvo shifts probably reveal why MC finally fell on his sword. Jimmy & Nath with Emma only outrating 2UE by 0.3% is a bit of a worry too.
Speaking of the AM music station, I think their ratings are a bit worrying when you consider the Classic Hits relaunch gave them a golden (no pun intended!) opportunity to pick up disgruntled ex-WS listeners. A bigger external ad campaign and maybe flying Cathy Jubb up to Sydney for something like a week of OB brekky shows, mightn’t be a bad idea.
Shareholder #2 – completely unnecessary and unfair call out on Lauren Joyce, it is this type of diatribe that is a stain on our industry. Be better.
You want it to end? Sell. ….. ……….. …. . . seriously.
According to this, half of all Australians listen to commercial radio.
If only I even knew someone who does. Anybody.
The overhaul of ABC Radio National has, IMO, produced the best line-up in a long time. Yet I was already a long-time listener.
There is something fundamentally wrong at ABC & this extends to the local ABC on 774 AM.
No doubt this will make ABC an easy target for its critics who believe a largesse of money is spent on a public broadcaster serving a diminishing audience.
Hopefully Radio National will continue to be valued by enough listeners. It’s an important expression of our nation’s culture, though perhaps could still be more intellectually diverse than it is.
Note that Cada had a significant lift in Melbourne. Bit ironic given the KJ situation.
“WSFM now Gold 101.7” ought to consider becoming “Oops, here’s an oldie you’ll really like – so, sorry for the interruption to regular programming – This is still 101.7 WSFM”
Can 2UE attribute their rise to change at Gold?
They might at least want to reconsider extending this navel gazing to Adelaide.
Some sharp declines at Cruise 1323, 4BH & 3MP – but might be bit early to panic.
