Gold stars all ‘round: The Christian O’Connell Show claims #1 in Melbourne FM Breakfast
It’s a case of gold stars all ‘round at ARN Melbourne, where Gold 104.3’s The Christian O’Connell Show has posted a spectacular survey result, taking the mantle from Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren as the city’s #1 FM Breakfast show.
The first GfK survey of 2025 saw the Gold brekky team of Christian O’Connell, Jack Post and Patrina Jones climb 2.8 points to move to an 11.5 share.
In celebrating today’s result, O’Connell said “Today my team and I are buzzing at the news. We haven’t had mega marketing money and done big noisy cash give aways, this is about making a show with our audience with our hearts that I hope matters. We are in scary times, and we need all the help we can get. I hope my show is a beacon of joy.”
Gold enjoyed increases across every shift throughout the weekday, and on weekends.
ARN’s departing Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell said “In Melbourne, Christian O’Connell’s return to #1FM – off the back of a huge 2.8% share jump – is a fantastic achievement for GOLD. It’s testament to the energy that the team are delivering on air and their connection with Melburnians.”

The Nova brekky team of Jase Hawkins, Lauren Phillips and Clint Stanaway now holds down second place in Melbourne FM Breakfast, dropping 1.4 to a 10.1 share, ahead of Fox’s Fifi, Fev and Nick (-1.0 to 8.4).

Just a couple of months after launching, Triple M Melbourne’s Breakfast show team of Mick Molloy, Titus O’Reily, Nick Riewoldt and Rosie Walton enjoyed a solid book, up 1.3 – and with an increased cume – to sit outright 4th among the FMs with a 7.9 share.
SCA’s Chief Content Officer Dave Cameron says “Melbourne has lapped up the brilliant new Mick in the Morning Breakfast show on its debut, achieving the best Triple M breakfast result in six years. This team with Mick, Roo, Titus and Rosie are delivering magic chemistry already, and we see an exciting year ahead for the show as it becomes the breakfast destination to listen to as the footy season heats up.”
Notably, and for the first time since launching into Melbourne, KIIS duo Kyle and Jackie O finally saw their share number rise, up 0.1 to 5.1, leaving them sixth among the FM Breakfast shows, with a cume increase of 46,000.

Of K & J’s latest Melbourne result, Campbell says “It’s promising to see Kyle & Jackie O gain momentum, growing their share and adding 46,000 weekly listeners – the biggest increase in the market.”
“Our priority in 2025 is to turn casual listeners into devoted fans, and with a show built on big stars and unmissable moments, we know we have a winning formula.”
AM talk station 3AW continues to dominate the Melbourne Breakfast airwaves, with Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft up 1.3 to a 20.6 share.
Why is the continued runaway success of Russel and Ross on 3AW relegated to the last paragraph? I understand why news and entertainment media focus on FM radio — because they are chasing that same audience and the personalities are deemed to be more interesting. But as a radio industry publication, shouldn’t RT be celebrating and analysing actual overall success?
Radio Today has also published a standalone story on 3AW’s results today.
@BD
I agree with you. 20% market share in the breakfast timeslot in Australia’s largest radio market is nothing short of unbelievable, yet we only ever hear about the FM breakfast shows who get just 10%. It’s about time people started talking more about the extraordinary ratings success that Ross and Russ have held for so long. Talkback is not dead.
The reason why people are more focused on FM is because the AW share/cume is driven by demographics that aren’t of interest to radio and advertisers.
That isn’t to discount the 3AW breakfast ratings they’re great at what they do but when you look at the cume their 25-54 figures, which is the sweet spot radio stations want to win and the one that makes money, their figures are dreadful. Nearly half the 3AW cume comes from 65+.
