Pandemic prompts audio doco series on Chinese History

Prompted by the rise in anti-Asian racism around the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, journalist and audio presenter Mell Chun set out to research the Chinese history of Tasmania.

“We often view people of colour as ‘newcomers’ but learning about the history of immigration helps us to understand that Australia’s heritage is not so white as we might imagine.”

The Judith Neilson Institute Grant for Asian Journalism aims to encourage more and better reporting on Asia by Australian journalists and media outlets.

Since 2019, the Institute has worked with the Walkley Foundation to provide funding for freelancers to undertake important reporting projects.

Mell, who started out volunteering for Edge Radio in Hobart now works on FBi’s award-winning storytelling show All the Best.
